Re: sleep apnea NO insurance
Hi. I am new to the cpap community. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in November while in the hospital for atrial fibrillation.
I had insurance at the time but lost my job end of year due to downsizing. I still have insurance because my employer is paying the premium for a few months but I will be losing it and it scares me! I can't afford the Cobra premium $1300/month or regular insurance $1000/month (if they'd even take me). So I understand exactly what you are going through.
If you have been turned down for insurance, you can qualify for the state program, but again, it's very expensive. I don't have answers for you but hopefuly someone else will.

I was in that position a couple of times when I lost my job and ended up not having insurance coverage. This is what I found out - unless you can get into a group policy - meaning (more than one person for a group) you will have to find single coverage. Single coverage is expensive and insurance Companies are very selective in who they are willing to cover and typically never cover preexisting conditions. (Or they have long waiting periods before you are covered) The thing I did was to get a short term coverage policy. (Basically it has a very high deductible, only covers you for 90-180 days) and covers catastrophic events. (But no preexisting conditions) I know Blue Cross and Time Insurance offer these types of policies. (I'm sure there are others depending on where you live) Check online - you will get your best premiums there as opposed to finding an Agent who will typically charge more. They are well worth the price and are typically called "bridge" policies. (Designed to bridge you from unemployment to employment again) The premiums are more expensive the lower the deductible you choose. I always chose the highest deductible to get the lowest premium. I figured I was only buying it for catastrophic events anyway.
As far as covering your current conditions without insurance. I found that my Dr. had a ton of samples he was willing to give me. You might also be able to switch to some cheap generics that do almost the same thing as your current medications. Walmart and others sell many of these for only $4.00 a month.
I'd call your Dr. and explain your situation. I found they were very sympathetic and willing to help me out however they could.
I'm not quite sure how the new Obama Health care plan plays into all of this. I have been employed the last several years so I haven't had to worry about it.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

Dr's have samples, also you might call the company that makes the drug, they have programs that will supply you with free medicine.

If you XPAP, collects full data you can see how you are doing with software. you can get a script that will all you to buy the supplies you need for XPAP, online buying is much cheaper than a DME supplier, and may be less than a copay. That should cut out the need for a XPAP doctor.
Best of luck with ins, just about the only thing would be find a job with ins, and I'd keep quiet about Sleep Apnea, as long as you can prove you have it treated successfully, I don't consider myself having it. ( I just use it to breath while sleeping, wink!) Jim

Use data to optimize your xPAP treatment!
