MATTRESS TOPPER INPUT/RECOMMENDATIONS

Post by fullrun » Fri Feb 04, 2011 11:57 am

I am aware that this subject has been discussed previously, but I am looking for, perhaps, more recent developments, experience and feedback. And, specifically, would like to locate reputable and fair-priced resources from whom I can purchase a visco memory foam mattress topper... a well as one who offers a 30-day return if not satisfied. Given the price tag on this item... and not knowing whether this is going to work for me or not... I would wish, of course, to have the option of returning it.

I am looking for a memory foam mattress topper within certain specifications: I am a dedicated side-sleeper. From all the research I have done, I understand in order for the memory foam to work most effectively for me, it should be, at least, 3" thick and of 4lb density. I'm 210 lbs and share the bed with my wife. And, of course, I'm looking for a product where the memory foam's odor wore off or was not a problem.

We currently have a very good firm mattress (5 years-old)... but I am looking for an additional top layer that will relieve the pressure that I am now experiencing on both my muscles and joints. Ahhh... aging

As always, your assist and feedback are very appreciated..

Have you looked at overstock.com? While I don't think returns are allowed for that product because of health thing, they have some very reasonably priced toppers in various thicknesses and manufacturers.

Not sure if Bed Bath and Beyond will allow returns either for that product. They offer some but I found larger selection at overstock.

Look here and see if you find something you might like. It's where I bought mine. They have a return policy.

Indeed, Costco and Costco.com have some great choices. Got mine there. Look for at least 2 inches (more is better) of Memory Foam, not just latex. You can return anything at Costco. Memory foam may cause you to sweat, so if that happens, you may want to put a cotton pad/blanket on top of the topper under the sheet. My topper has a quilt layer on top so additional pad was not necessary.

I use mine on top of my Select Comfort Sleep Number bed. Excellent. Let me put a plug in for Select Comfort beds. My mattress is as good as new after 21 years except the pillow top is now flat and I had replaced the egg-crate foam layer that covers the air badders. Get the cheapest select comfort bed and put one of the memory foam toppers on it; a superior and much cheaper combination than the deluxe pillow top model of mattress. My mattress is on a piece of plywood on the slats of my bed frame, no box spring/platform needed unless needed for looks or increased height. Very easy to pack into a box when moving or spring cleaning. Very expensive initial investment though. Try to get in on a refurbished model from the factory outlet to save $1000 but you can't return it I don't think. And watch out for the "free" trial. I've heard that shipping it back to the Minnesota factory, even if you bought it locally, will cost you $60 on top of the original shipping cost, so your free trial may be $120. Also, I and many more have found that you tend to roll into the gap between the two air bladders in the middle of the bed. The foam "bridge" that they will provide if you complain is not really adequate but should be free for the asking, mine was. I have found that rolling an old quilt or comforter into a log and putting between the two bladders solves the problem and cannot be felt through the egg-crate foam, the now flat pillow top, and finally the memory foam topper.

I have purchase 3 memory foam toppers. I forget the Brand but I could maybe find it at my overstock account if needed.
They were all of the 4 lb density. First one was a 2 inch for hubby to use in the sleep cab of his truck.
Second one was 4 inch that I used on the bed at home. Third one was for hubby in the truck because the first one finally got flat and offered no support. He is a big guy but I will talk about the one I used at home.

It was okay when he was gone but when he was home I tended to roll toward him with it. But that also relates to mattress under it. So it was more comfortable for me when he was gone.

Odor was never a problem with any of them for us. Directions tell you to open and let it roll out on its own to expand and let the odor dissipate. There is some odor. Not hugely nasty but some people who are sensitive to odors might find it objectionable. It does fade away.

We eventually decided on a Sleep number bed 2 months ago when I got tired of rolling into him and to be honest, the topper didn't seem to help with my back pain after a year as much as it did at first. Of course my mattress wasn't the greatest but it wasn't the worst either.

If I had it to do over again and was dead set on the topper,, I would opt for the 3 inch. The 4 inch is quite thick and a person does sink down into it.. Turning over is just a wee bit of work when back hurts and a person has the 4 inch. Just my experience, individual mileage will vary. I will tell you this, the sleep number bed was the best investment I have ever made except maybe the cpap machine. I won't hijack your thread about it though. I had to try the topper before I wanted to turn loose with the money for the sleep number...

I had enough back and neck pain to affect the quality of my sleep. I am just now waking up feeling less pain and finally seeing the positive results from my cpap therapy these last 2 months. All because my pain was affecting my sleep...

Oh, one more thing, the memory foam can retain body heat somewhat. Not huge but it is warmer with its use.

Oh, I see one other person is talking about the sleep number bed. The one I got has interchangable memory foam inside it...Got mine during Black Friday specials for 50% off. Still a lot of money though.

This is the one we bought, it's latex rather than memory foam and you don't sink into it as much. My husband is disabled and had a hard time turning over on the memory foam topper. The latex is firmer so you don't feel you've sunk into a hole but gives just enough softness that keeps our old bones happy and well rested.

I bought this memory foam mattress topper and like it a lot:

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/produ ... tId=200938

It has 4lb density, 2.5" thick. There was never an odor problem. Whats weird is they used to specify the density on Sam's Club website - thats the only reason I got it. Suspicious its no longer listed (I bought it in December). I'm also a side sleeper out of necessity, and I weigh 20lbs more than you.

I have had a few of these. The costco one is very good and you can't beat their guarantee on anything. I actually returned mine because I just couldn't get warm on it. But I have trouble being warm enough because of other heath issues and most people would probably find it a plus that it isn't too hot to sleep on. I currently have one I bought at Sears, I think. It takes a little while of airing them out to get rid of the initial smell and then they are fine.

I slept on a friend's memory foam *mattress* from costco when I was visiting her lately and that was the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on! When it's time to replace mine, that's what I am getting!

I have to agree that memory foam does not last a lifetime. My first memory foam topper has now replaced the egg-crate foam in my sleep number bed, with the new topper on top of the flat pillow top. My Costco memory foam pillow is great but they too have a limited life, about 2-3 years. Don't buy those $100 pillows when you can get two for $30 at Costco (well they were a year ago, now they are $68, yikes).

Also, the pound rating really makes a difference so there are real differences between products, for toppers and pillows. http://www.memoryfoam.com has a lot of good information regarding the differences between 3, 5 and 6 lb foam and their warranty looks excellent 5, 10 and 15 yrs for the 3, 5, and 6 lb. but you pay for it.

Although I praise the sleep number bed, I still had low back pain; turned out to be a progressively herniated disc that finally popped one day when I was lifting 100 lbs. Surgery took care of that 3 yrs ago; the bed could only do so much. As old age (50) creeps in on the other discs, I must add that the third best purchase I have made since the CPAP and bed, was a Teeter Hang Ups, also from Costco.com, now $220. Talk about hijacking a thread . But seriously, hanging upside down for 3-5 minutes a day by your feet does wonders for back pain and neck pain, relief that lasts for a day or two. I have a bit of residual nerve damage from my herniated disc that at times radiates pain down my right leg and sometimes cramps my calf, but that too is relieved by hanging. I must add that I do get low back pain on hotel mattresses, but rarely if ever now with the sleep number plus topper combo, kept in check by hanging by my feet a couple times a week. I used to be 220, but now 190.

If I was thinking about buying a >$150 topper because I had low back pain, I would get the Teeter Hang Up before the topper. Return it to Costco if it doesn't do the trick, but I think it would do you wonders to relieve your muscle and joint pain.
