Lungs hurt in the morning

Post by Bobka62 » Wed Feb 09, 2011 7:39 am

My lungs hurt every morning when I awake. Most mornings I have to get out of bed to feel better. This just recently started after approximately 3 months on the CPAP machine. I have the machine with the humidifier built in and use distilled water as prescribed. Does anyone else suffer from lung pain in the morning? Can it be related to the CPAP machine or humidification?

That's a common complaint of new CPAP users. I've had two bouts of it during the past 6 months myself. I attributed it to the pressure keeping my lungs more fully inflated and stretching of the cartelages that hold the rib cage together. That, and sleep position. I used to be exclusively a side-sleeper. Only way I could breathe at night, and I didn't do even that very well. When I got on the hose, I found myself sleeping for long periods, sometimes the entire night, flat on my back. The pressure made my ribs hurt. I intentionally began to pay more attention to how much time I spend on my back vs. my side, and that quickly made the pain go away.

That said, any pain in your chest is something your physician should be made aware of. Cardiovascular problems can often cause pain in unexpected places.

You might take a minute to fill out your profile from the front page of the forum so we know what equipment you are using. It might be that if your equipment has some sort of expiratory pressure relief, simply by switching that on, you can get some quick relief.
