I am FREAKING THE DOG OUT!!!!

Post by McSnoresalot » Wed Feb 09, 2011 3:15 pm

So, I have a house full of women - Wifey and 3 daughters - to keep my sanity and have someone to hang out with in the garage I have Dog.

Dog is ok - he's been around for 5 yrs now, we get along pretty good, he tolerates the girls, doesn't drink too much of my beer and takes out a squirrel every once in a while - keeping up is end of the deal.

Anyway - as per our agreement, Dog stays off the furniture and bed (until I fall asleep and Wifey coaxes him up) - Now I know she is doing this, but Dog knows he's on shaky ground so he stays at the foot of the bed (King) on her side and is gone if he hears me waking up.

Well - I forgot to warn Dog about the facehugger I was strapping on at night (hell I don't tell Wifey everything, why the hell would I tell Dog?)

Long story short - All hell broke loose last night - Dog got the invite from Wifey to jump on the bed, takes on look at me with the facehugger and goes into attack mode! I didn't get bit (only because Wifey was able to deflect his charge) but it was close - there was quite a scuffle between me getting the mask off and a hold on Dog - he was some put out.

So Dog is bunking with the kids for a couple days til we can work this out.

I say get rid of the wife and teach the dog to sleep on the floor.

OH CRAP!! Hadn't thought of that.

Dog's job -- guard the girl.
Dog sleeps with the Girl.
Unless the Girl is gone somewhere then dog sleeps with us.
Girl hasn't been gone since CPAP started.

THANK YOU Mac!!!! You may have just saved me from gettin' dogbit!

Cover your mask with hamburger or peanut butter and the dog will love it

How strange! I sleep with my husband and 2 dogs. When I had my new mask, she just came and sniffed my face, looked at the mask, trying to decide how on earth to kiss me goodnight, so a small lick on my forhead sufficed and she settled down. Maybe your dog needs to know it's still you in there and not get surprised with Darth Vador! He needs to be desensitized just like we do!

Regards,

Jersey Girl

You have to put on the mask and let the dog get adjusted. Poor thing. LOL My dog doesn't even seem to notice.

That's hilarious.... My cat (see gorgeous pic at left) was freaked out by my mask, too. I invited him over to meet it and sniff..... still took several nights before he would come up and sleep on the bed again. Now he is fearless.... even comes up to my mask and gets a face full of vent air! Try letting Dog meet your mask under friendly terms.... of course, dogs might be prone to wanting to grab it and play, but you need to make him understand it is not the enemy! Good luck!!
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

I had a similar issue but instead with one of our cats. The one that normally sleeps beside me wanted nothing to do with that strange hissing thing on my face and promptly left the room. I was sleeping quite well when I was quickly awakened after another of our cats decided to join me on the bed and noticed the hissing contraption. Unsure of what it may be he took the shoot first and ask questions later approach and was slapping it rather hard and woke me up. It was all I could not to choke as I tried to stifle my laugh once I realized what had woke me up. Once he realized it was not a threat he then curled up and went to sleep.

My Schnauzer (and my my dog, too ! ) wanted no part of the mask/cpap setup for the first couple of week. She would go the farthest end corner of the bed to sleep. Now, its business as usual..she's back to wedging in as tight as she can against me, which is a real pain in the tush when I want to turn over . I have to physically push her out of the way. Once I get comfortable in that position, she's back for more snuggling. I have to repeat this process a few times a night.

We have two cats - one that is visually-oriented and one that is olfactorily-oriented. They are both indoor-only cats. One time I wore a wide-brimmed hat and the visually-oriented one (normally the boldest) got very shy - she didn't know who I was. The olfactorily-oriented cat knew who I was as soon as I walked by, and was unphased by my appearance. Neither has seen me with my mask on, since they aren't allowed upstairs. It might be an interesting experiment, but I don't want to scare the cat.

One thing they have in common - recognition of the can-opener sound and the can-pop-top sound... They come running every time, and we don't even feed them canned food. (We adopted the pair from the local humane society, where I'm certain they learned to equate those sounds with canned food.)

One of the BLESSINGS of Cpap is that the cat won't come near me when the machine goes on. I will do absolutely nothing to change that!

McS.... Thank YOU for sharing your comedic tail (pun intended)! Humor is valuable when dealing with XPAP.

Sweetie the cat is not even afraid of the vacuum cleaner.... so a little air blown into his ears from an exhaust port is no big deal. And from time to time he will walk up and stick his nose on the port. I'm glad the air is constantly blowing out...not being sucked in when he does that
Pleasent dreams,
Cindy

The original post made me chuckle, but this one made me laugh out loud. Just picturing that tickles my funny bone.
