Resmed S9 Battery Backup Using Resmed DC Converter

Post by BernieRay » Sun Mar 20, 2011 11:45 am

Now that the Resmed S9 DC Converter (Ref 36970) is available, I thought that I would post some pictures of my setup. First off, a big thank you to JohnBFisher for posting his setup in Battery Backup Design. Close ups of the converter can be seen in billbolton's Resmed S9 DC-DC Converter Photos.

Surge Suppressor and Charger:

I chose to wall mount the suppressor and charger so that they are easily reached yet aren't in the way of the workbench just below them. The charger can be removed by simply tilting it out of its wall mount. Although my charger came with a red rubber base (can't be seen in the photo), they can also come with a yellow one. Either one is model XC100-P, part #100X010. In the second picture, 3 of the ISOBAR's outlets are covered by child safety covers that were included with the supressor, just to keep them clean.

Battery Cart:

I've had a Magna Cart MCX for a while and have found it to be a great deal for the money. I bought an MCI to use with my battery since it is sturdier. I cut some 3/4" plywood to put beneath the battery box so that the battery won't get as cold from the concrete floor. Although my garage is heated, the floor can stay quite cold in the winter so I wanted to reduce it's impact on the battery. The plywood also allowed me to strap the box down securely using the screw-down strap brackets that came with the box (one is just visible underneath the front of the box - the other is in back). Plus, the base plate of the cart is textured with tiny "dots" that stick up just a hair, so the weight of the battery will keep the box/plywood assembly from slipping. I used a 25 ft SAE extension cord between the charger and the battery, since I'll be keeping the cart at the other end of the garage.

Battery Box

The 5/16" posts of the Optima made hook up very simple without having to use clamps or terminal adapters. The fuse-protected cable came with the PulseTech charger.

Connected to my S9 Autoset:

Because my power doesn't go out often, I chose to go with a multi-stage charger to help prevent sulfation, allowing the battery to last longer. The downside with using this charger is that I can't power the S9 from the battery while it is charging. I don't want to keep it in my bedroom except when needed, so this wasn't an issue that I was concerned with. If I ever need to power the S9 from the battery while charging, I'll get a Battery Tender Jr like JohnBFisher used. Thanks to the Powerlet Y-adapter and Luggage Electrix Connector, swapping between these chargers would be simple.
