Anyone else notice a singing voice improvement after CPAP?
Anyone else notice a singing voice improvement after CPAP?
I've been using my CPAP 3-4 weeks. Besides feeling more rested and having more clear, consistent energy during the day, one interesting benefit I've noticed since using my CPAP is an overall improvement in my singing voice. I'm no pro. My singing occurs mostly in the car, shower or church. But I have noticed an improvement in my tone (timbre?), strength, ease, air, and flow. It just generally seems more effortless to make a sound while singing. Is it that the CPAP is toning or relaxing the muscles of the throat a bit? Or perhaps having some effect on the vocal chords? Anyone else notice this same effect? Or have any explanation of this nice little benefit I'm experiencing?

Well for 8 hours you are breathing filtered humid air. You are also not snoring and you may be not having acid reflux that really burns your throat. All of which means less mucus in the throat and easier breathing.

On the flip side, I have been wondering about the benefits of vocal exercises to help strengthen the muscles around the airway.

I was going to post that I couldn't sing a note before CPAP, but can sing beautifully now. What you said seems much better, not to mention true for me as wellnanwilson wrote:If I could sing in the first place maybe it would help .

My voice improved substantially: timbre and range--and I thought it was just age.

Interesting observation!
In fact, one might expand the question to...anyone notice an improvement in singing or speaking voice? I have pondered this very thing for a long time.
One thing that I've noticed is that many of the osa patients (especially those of normal weight) that I know have a higher-pitched, forced, and lower volume speaking voice. This could be more prevalent in OSA caused by caused by throat architecture abnormalities, as opposed to weight-related OSA. Not sure.
As for me, I'm of normal weight, and likely have had OSA most of my life. My speaking voice had steadily hoarsened and weakened; however post xPAP, my speaking voice strength and tonal quality has improved some. I have to consciously apply good speaking techniques, but they have more effect now that I've had years of xPAP. The reason? I would imagine that the nightly tensing of throat and airway muscles and tightened jaws during bouts of intermittant hypoxia can mess up daytime voice, and that xPAP returns some of this by leaving airways more relaxed.. Thus, an unusual throat architecture can OSA, which inturn messes up throat architecture further. xPAP can (apparently) help this somewhat.

I've noticed a distinct change in the clarity of my singing voice. I sing all the time... just at home or wherever I go... and I am really enjoying the improvement.

I sing baratone in our church choir. My voice is more pure, more on key, my timing is better, and I am having a far better mental game so I am appreciating all the other sections as I alternate blending my voice with theirs or carrying the action.

Re: Anyone else notice a singing voice improvement after CPAP?
I had a problem with the occasional, slightly slurred speech before CPAP. This afternoon, while doing vocal warmup exercises on my way to a job interview, I noticed the absence of any slur with certain phrases like "truly rural" and "the epitome of femininity."

I was going to ask this question, myself!
I sing (and dance! and jump around!) a lot to the Rolling Stones. I am very grateful to already be in Mick Jagger's range, and have noticed being able to match him even more closely, which is satisfying. Don't dare attempt his screams, tho'.
I like the song, jnk. Is that you? Beautiful voice.

Yep.napstress wrote: Is that you?
Writing odd little songs then recording them on computer is something I like to do as a hobby and to irritate my wife.
Thanks for the kind words.
