Sleeping eye mask, anyone?

Post by zeeclass » Sat Jul 23, 2011 5:08 pm

Most nights, I wear earplugs and I USED to wear a nice Bucky eyemask, too.

But now that I'm on cpap, I can't wear my Bucky eyemask at all. If I try to put it under my nasal mask, it interferes with the nasal mask's seal. If I put it on top of my nasal mask, it puts pressure on the bridge of my nose (no matter how loose I try to make it) and it also lets in a lot of light because the nasal mask is in the way of the eye mask.

I saw these plastic sleep goggles on the web and wondered if anyone had used them? They look interesting, but I wonder if the hard plastic would bother me in my sleep

I sewed a very crude mask for myself out of some fleece, but frankly it's not as comfortable as I'd like it to be.

So if anyone here has solved the eye mask problem, I'd love to hear your solution. It seems like it should be easy and simple, but in fact it is quite a bit complicated.

I use a piece of flannel that has no fuzz/fibers to get in my eyes - it's smooth. I have a stack of them so that I can use a fresh one every night. Of course this may only work for the ComfortLite2 mask which secures the flannel by fitting it under the forehead piece of the mask.

I have just started using TranquilEyes goggles, the regular kind, not the kind they advise for CPAP, because I can fit them over my FX mask and I am trying to deal with Dry Eye. Love them!! They are way more comfortable than they look, at least in my case.

FOUND A SLEEPING EYE MASK THAT WORKS REALLY WELL!!!!!! Yea!

My elderly mother had been visiting me the past few weeks and yesterday was her flight home. As usual, I got a gate pass to accompany her to the gate at the airport. After seeing her off to her flight, I realized that there are a TON of different sorts of sleeping masks in the airport shops, so I bought three different types. Bingo, one of them works really well.

It is a travel sleeping eye mask made by Bucky:

http://www.bucky.com/catalog/Travel_Acc ... inks_.html

I wear it UNDER my nasal cpap mask (that is, it goes under the plastic part at the bridge of the nose). It doesn't interfere with the mask seal or the exhaust output, and it blocks out the light very well, it's extremely comfortable, and it doesn't leave any marks on my face in the morning.

Here is a photo of it:

It comes in a bunch of neat colors and patterns, but the one I got at the airport is black like the one above. It costs $12.95 at the bucky website.

Previously, before starting CPAP, my favorite sleeping eye mask was the "Eye Shades with Ear Plugs" also made by Bucky, which is on their site for $17.95. But with a cpap nasal mask, this eye mask is too bulky. If you just need a sleeping mask to use without CPAP, this one is really nice, and I especially like that you can stash earlugs in the built-in compartment.

Anyway, I will probably get a couple more of these in colors or patterns. cpap.com should consider carrying this product!

>Bump<

I just bought a Sleepmaster by mail: http://www.amazon.com/Revolutionary-Pat ... 387&sr=1-1

We'll see if it works better than the scarf I tied over my eyes last night. I mean, I'm wearing a mask, I'm taping my mouth...how is a mask going to make me look like MORE of a freak? I don't think it's possible.

You need a good-sized nose to wear the Quartx eye shield.
I found children/youth's swim goggles for much less; that have an adjustable nose bridge. (why not on the Quartz?)
the shape also does not interfere with any of my masks, as the quartz did--badly!
I wonder if TranquilEyes is similarly sized.

Preliminary impressions on first two nights with the Sleepmaster.

(1) Oh, WOW! Why did I never think of sleeping with an eyemask before? It is fabulous to sleep in total darkness.

(2) The Sleepmaster is pretty comfortable, soft and light, but it's quite warm because it's designed to cover the ears for some soundproofing as well. It might be too warm for me in the summer. This is a shame, because I really like using an eyemask and will probably be totally dependent on it by then.

(3) It fit very nicely over my Swift FX with Bella ear loops setup.

(4) It did slip around a little bit the second night, but by then it was time to get up anyway. It's covered with a sort of slippery satin and filled with some kind of cotton batting. There are probably mods I can to to reduce slippage. I think a cotton or fleece cover might have been better (but the satin might be cooler for the summer).

The package insert says to handwash the Sleepmaster.
