How much vinegar?

Post by snoozysue » Fri Aug 26, 2011 1:55 am

I thought I might wash my water chamber in a vinegar solution. It looks a bit cloudy even though I only ever use distilled water but I am unsure of the ratio of water to vinegar - could someone please tell me the correct ratio as I don't want to cause any damage.
Thanks

Mayo recommends 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts warm water.

My DME recommended 2 water to 1 vinegar.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Vinegar is pretty benign unless you let it sit. It washes clean, unlike soaps, and is so mildly acidic that it can't cause much damage during the short rinse, so the ratio is not very significant. That's why you will see many different ones. I also dabble in aquariums and when you need to clean it good (like after a fatal infection), Vinegar is the choice for this very reason. Soaps can leave surfactants behind, which would kill the new fish, Vinegar doesn't stay behind after being rinsed with water and it's just acidic enough to kill harmful bacteria.

I keep a spray bottle filled with plain old white vinegar in the bathroom. I let my hard shell and silicon oral cushion and pillows soak in a soapy solution for 20 mins to several hrs. Then, I rinse everything very well. While everything's wet, I spray everything with vinegar and let sit 2-5 mins, then rinse very well again and let sit under my nightlight typically 5-15 mins to dry.

Hose gets soap & water then connected with a hose connector. I swirl the solution thru the hose, rotating it often to ensure all surfaces get doused. I let that sit for 10-15 mins, rinse well. Add more water and spray some vinegar inside and swirl again. Let that sit for a few minutes, rinse very well, shake out excess water, hook it up to my old data-less CPAP for 20 mins or so to fully dry.

100% vinegar. Seriously, there's enough doubt about its powers to kill bacteria that you might as well use it at full strength. You can buy it in gallon bottles at Safeway. I rarely clean anything anymore--keeping your sinuses flowing matters more than the CPAP hoses--but when I do, I take my vinegar neat.
