chin strap vs full face mask

Post by gduncan » Tue Dec 13, 2011 6:29 pm

I have to wear a chin strap to prevent my mouth breathing. Would a full face mask work better for me than the chin strap which I dislike? I've had my cpap for 6 months and use a mask that covers my nose only with a chin strap. I could not use the nasal pillow mask as it made my nose raw.
Thanks for any advice

Everyone is different, the only way you'll know is to try a FF. What is it about the chin strap you dislike? I'd suggest you register and list your equipment and mask in the User Control Panel.

The potential disadvantages of a FFM include:

You MIGHT need more pressure due to it pushing your jaw back.
You may have more leak problems because there's more surface area.
Since it has to fit at more points, it may be harder to fit.
You can't drink, eat, take pills, etc. with the mask on.
Talking will be harder.
It may be harder to wear with glasses.

Of course, nasal masks and chin straps have their own disadvantages.

If you're more comfortable with the full face mask than the chin strap, go for it.

By the way, some people find they still need a chin strap with a FFM.

I use a full face mask with a chin support built in, which works for me. My husband, daughter and dog can understand me when I talk with it on. As far as pills go, popping in the pill quick and using a straw works okay.

It's all a matter of preference. My daughter uses a nasal mask and my husband prefers nasal pillows. But they both breathe consistently through their noses.
