Buying a mask without a prescription?

Post by rhaas1955 » Tue Jan 17, 2012 9:12 pm

Hi,

I've been using my CPAP for ~5 years now and need a need mask. I'm currently using a Swift Nasal pillow mask and am interested in buying a Swift FX Nasal Pillow mask but all the websites I've seen require a prescription. Does anyone know where I can just buy one to replace the one I'm using now?

Thanks in advance.

You need a prescription to buy a mask but you can buy the pieces off of e bay and build one. All you need is the head gear and the nasal pillow plus the hose.

Have you checked the sellers at Amazon.com? I see machines and masks offered and no mention of RX requirement. Unsure if they contact a person after the item has been through checkout or not.

Otherwise..EBay. Ebay sellers have got around the RX requirement by offering individual replacement parts (which individually don't require RX). You can do the same with online sellers.
3 parts needed for the Swift FX nasal pillow mask system.

Headgear
Short hose assembly.. sometimes you get lucky and it is packaged with the headgear.
Nasal Pillow ...you would need to estimate size unless you spot someone offering the 3 sizes in one package on Ebay.

Smart shopping on EBay can get you a complete setup for around $80 or even less. Often Shipping is free or minimal. Many sellers are DMEs and have Buy it Now prices and you don't have to go through the auction wait.

Sometimes Craigslist but hit or miss if your requested mask is being offered locally. I would do EBay over craigslist for masks if it were me unless local and a really good price.

The side strap protectors are optional and you can make them yourself if you need them or buy better ones from Padacheek.com.

Finally any doctor can write the prescription. Doesn't have to be a sleep doctor. Your family doctor can do it.

You can get some masks from some online sellers without a prescription. Usually not ResMed masks. Shop around.
