Feels like a punch in the stomach during sleep??

Post by daisy56 » Sun Feb 05, 2012 9:54 pm

Ok, this is soooo weird, but this started just weeks before being diagnosed for sleep apnea. Each time this happens I think it wont happen again, but it DOES!
While Im asleep I wake up to my stomach area feeling like I was punched, I can literally feel the area being sucked/pushed in and then violently back out real quick like.
This happens maybe just once during each night, but it hurts and is sore afterwards. Its right where the stomach sac would be, not down low where we think of our tummy being...but up higher right where our stomach is. Again its a quick in and out feeling...sudden jerk like, its being sucked in and out.
Sorry to sound so goofy, but I am asking in hopes that this is maybe a common of sleep apnea and you guys will tell me, 'oh, yeah, this happens to us all"
Lord help me to remember that nothing is going to happen to me today that you and I together cant handle.

You need to check this out with a real doctor. There are lots of organs in that area you don't want to neglect.

This is something you should go see a doctor about.

Most pain in that area isn't where you think it is. For example liver related pain is nearly never in the right area and often on the right shoulder in the rare cases when a liver hurts. Gallbladder pain can be on the left hip even though its below the right lower rib. Heart attack pain tends to be on the left upper area but can be anywhere. Chances are its something digestive related so keep track of what you eat and when and what time the pain happens. For example, Does a glass of milk at bed time cause happen 2 hours later? That sort of info is useful for a doctor.

And check your data for that time period to see what is happening.

Never experienced that; ask your doctor/internist.

If I had to make a guess based on my own experience (it doesn't happen at night though, just during the day) it sounds possible as if you are having a muscle cramp. I get them when I strain for something. Perhaps, when you are having a particularly apnic episode and you are struggling to initiate respiration again. That strain could be initiating either a muscle cramp in the abdominal wall or even possibly, your diaphragm. However, that being my guess, I would check it out with a doctor. Could be nothing, could be something and possibly something you don't want to mess around with too long.

If there is a muscle cramp, try 8 glasses of water a day.
When I fell off my 'water wagon', I immediately had a return of the charley horse that had been gone for many months.

Lots of us have problems with air in the stomach and further down the alimentary canal due to CPAP. Is there any chance it's a gas problem?

Of course, it's possible you have some unrelated medical problem. Don't make the mistake of assuming that all your problems are related to apnea or CPAP. Or that you haven't developed some unusual CPAP related problem.

Thanks so much yall. All of you, It was mentioned --- Perhaps, when you are having a particularly apnic episode and you are struggling to initiate respiration again.
( Sorry, I dont know how to copy and paste like yall do on here...well, I know how to copy and paste, LOL, just not the way yall are doing it on here)

Anway, that sounds like it could be it...or atleast what I feared without saying it outloud. But, when I awake from it, I seem to think my mouth is closed and just fine.
(I just use a nasal mask) But the muscle cramp sounds like a possiblitity too. I know its not gas! LOL, thanks archangle!! Appreciate it bud! Hey, thank you for
thinking of all the possiblites for me. I did google it on line and have found nothing. Atleast now I know it really should be discussed with Doctor. Mystery!
Lord help me to remember that nothing is going to happen to me today that you and I together cant handle.

Actually, this same exact thing happens to me too... maybe not more than once every 6 months? it's exactly the same though, wondering if you ever found out what the problem was? hope it doesn't happen to you too often... it's so uncomfortable and it feels like my stomach is totally getting sucked in and out really rapidly... Alteast you don't have to feel alone since I have the same exact problem and have never gone to see a doctor about it though.

I looked this up because it happened to me. It woke me. Scary. Felt like someone did a chest compression on my stomach. Really hurt. I haven't been diagnosed with sleep apnea though. I guess I will mention it to the doctor, although hell probably think I'm crazy. Oh yeah I though that my stomach was going to be bruised, that is how hard it felt that I was sucker punched. Let me know if your doc has any ideas of what caused it for you.

You also want to look into a diaphragmatic hernia - not uncommon and may be related.

I had tightness in the stomach after my first couple days on the machine.

It's called a myoclonic jerk. If you google it, you will find your exact symptoms.
