Full face mask and an open mouth

Post by mrnetwurm » Fri Feb 24, 2012 7:58 am

I have excellent results using a Swift LT nasal pillow mask, but, on occasion, if I am very congested, I need to breathe through my mouth. So, I was thinking of purchasing a Quattro FX full face mask. The Quattro FX comes in small, medium, and large. When I measure myself with my mouth closed, I need a medium, but I am confused about how this works in real life.

How does a full face mask work when your mouth moves in relation to the bridge of your nose when you open your mouth ? It seems that it would be impossible to fit and provide a seal that works for both an open and closed mouth.

Most folks use a full face mask because they are mouth breathers, they have "nose-issues" or... it feels good for them. The answer to your question is yes. The full face will be able to accommodate most mouth movements. Keep in mind, there are several different types and brands of full face masks. Most DME's will allow you to try a mask and return it for an exchange to a different mask within 30 days. Check with your DME. Mask hunting is normal. Find one that is comfortable and you are able to manage your leak rate.

I agree with the Sheriff...most mouth movements are no problem, but, think about it...how often do you open your mouth when you are sleeping? I found the FF mask much less confining than the nasal mask I was using.

I normally breathe through my nose, but when I have a cold (like now) my mouth opens as needed if I can't get air through my nose. I'm thinking my body will switch between mouth and nose breathing as needed and my mouth will open a bit at times.
