Hi all,
I've been using CPAP for the last few years. I've been 100% compliant, and my AHI is quite low. My machine is an APAP, so it should be catching all the apneas, and that's what my data shows.
And yet, I'm tired. I wake up unrefreshed. So, at the insistence (well, nagging ) of my wife, I'm trying to see what I can do to fix this.
I'm in Northern New Jersey. I've never had a good feeling about my current sleep doctor. He's a pulmonologist who prescribed the CPAP, but he never seemed interested in following up. When I reported that I was unrefreshed, all he wanted to do was get another sleep test, which reported the same info as the first sleep test.
So, does anyone have any really good Sleep Doctors to recommend, either in Northern NJ or in NYC? I'd prefer someone who took Blue Cross, but at this point, I'm open to any names.
Thanks very much,
Andy

Yes, I have another suggestion. If you click on "Local Services" icon above and enter your address you could then find Sleep Doctors on the list.

Re: Good Sleep Doctor in Northern New Jersey?
I can't name a specific doctor because I don't live in that area.
If you want to find a Board certified sleep doctor, go to http://certificationmatters.org/. You'll have to give them an email address and create a logon and username. However, you will then be able to find a Board certified sleep doctor in your area. The American Board of Sleep Medicine also used to produce diplomates in sleep medicine. People who became diplomates are still considered Board certified, although the organization no longer grants certificates. It maintains an alphabetical listing of diplomates at http://absm.org/listing.aspx.
If you want to find a sleep center accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, go to http://www.sleepcenters.org.
Although most sleep doctors appear to not be Board certified, I recommend you go to one, or a doctor is highly recommended, because you're still having problems.
The Local Services link, as far as I can tell, merely lists people who practice in that field. It doesn't guarantee that they have any special training or knowledge in the area.

Re: Good Sleep Doctor in Northern New Jersey?
Thanks to both of you, Kong and Avi, but I'm not just looking for a Doctor, I'm looking for a really good one. One that will look past the simple AHI numbers and look to see if there's something deeper. That's why I was asking for personal recommendations, someone you've had experience with, not just a name on a list.

Re: Good Sleep Doctor in Northern New Jersey?
Honestly I've been through 3 doctors already and I really like my newest one DR Brian Benoff in Englewood(contact info on bottom). I am on blue cross blue shield
He spoke to me for around 30 minutes the first time I saw him. Asked me all sorts of oddball questions for example "if you were alone on an island for vacation and could do anything unrestricted what would you do" I of course responded with "sleep comfortably until I'm actually felling awake ".
the last question was the best "I see all the numbers and graphs from the studies and cpap machine I have what the other doctors have said right here in front of me, but it comes down to this, are you refreshed when you wake up or do you feel like it could be better"?
He also returns calls same day, and doesn't seem like he's rushing.
I had used Dr Levy at first, but he in my opinion saw me as a $$$$$$ and didn't help out. he actually gave me a cpap with an "average pressure" because I didn't sleep for the 6 hour sleep study , when Dr Benoff has now proven through sleep studies that I need VPAP adapt for complex SA
Hope he can help you

Thank you very much! This is very useful information, and I will give Dr. Benoff very serious consideration. Thank you for taking the time to write such a useful reply.
