Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
I woke up with horrendous pain in my right face cheek area yesterday. I thought maybe I had torn a cheek muscle. This morning, I went to an emergency walk-in clinic where they directed me to immediately go to the hospital emergency room, as they thought it could be absessed and it might go to the brain. After palpating the swollen, hard cheek area, the doc thinks there is a stone in my salivary gland, like you get with a kidney stone, and that it is not a torn cheek muscle. Doc gave me Percocet and am to apply warm, moist heat to area. Has anyone had experience with a stone in their salivary gland, and if so, how long did it take you to get over it, and do you know why you got it, and anything else you know about it? Doc said to also suck on sour candy, which I'm doing too.
Avoid tooth extractions (including wisdom teeth) & train-track braces; find a functional orthodontist at http://iaortho.org/.

When are they going to remove it? I don't think it will dissolve away. If I remember right with kidney stones you ether pass them or they break the stone up with sound waves and then you pass it.

Did they do an ultrasound to determine its size?
It sounds like you may have to see your regular doctor.

Are you having any other symptoms?? My daughter has an autoimmune disease called Sjogren's syndrome which can cause inflammation and swelling in the salivary glands and lymph nodes. It is often accompanied by dry eyes, mouth and other mucus membranes. However, my daughter did not have the typical symptoms. A blood test can help with a diagnosis. Not trying to scare you-just passing along some information you might want to check out. The description you posted made me think of this since we have just recently started dealing with her diagnosis. Good luck-GG

Re: Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
I had a different issue once. I was sitting on the floor cutting out fabric when I sneezed and hit my mouth on my knee. It blocked a saliva gland (or something like that) I ended up with a very swollen mouth/face for days. I got referred to a dermatologist who cauterized it and eventually the swelling went down.
Try to get a referral to a dermatologist, they seem to be the ones to deal with saliva glands.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Six hours after the Percocet and the pain is back and intense (so I can take another one now). Doc didnt' say anything about the size of the stone or getting it removed. She just said it takes about 2 weeks for it to heal and gave me a referral to an ENT. I should have asked about how the stone goes away ( I guess I was traumatized by the event today). At first I thought I wouldn't have to call the ENT, but now I'm thinking I will definitely do that. I feel like I'm gonna go out of mind with this pain, and she only gave me 8 Percocet.

Re: Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
Hi - it's pretty common for any of the glands in the area (the submandibular gland is right at the angle of your jaw as it turns up to your ear) to be blocked, and/or to get infections from bad dental hygiene... follow up and get it seen to - why wait? A regular x-ray might not show a small stone though, but CT scan will and it's what's used more often to check them out.
Re: Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
I'm taking a wild guess. Dry mouth due to PAP pressure and air causing stone to form in salivary gland. Constantly moistening the mouth eventually allows the stone to pop out. Everything is hunky-dory again.

If you can't get to the ENT quickly, see about getting in to see your regular GP doctor quickly. Don't let the medical mafia let you sit in pain while they twiddle their thumbs. If you have trouble getting scheduled, be sure and point out that you're in considerable pain and having to take "bad" pain meds.
I'm guessing the ER doctor did his job of "make sure you aren't going to die quickly, give you some pain relief and refer to another doctor."
Be sure to get a quick evaluation of whether it's not some other non life threatening but painful condition.
Did you get any antibiotics? Your GP might want to give you some, as well as some other pain relief.

Re: Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
I had a salivary gland and duct removed because it was blocked. I agree with seeing your GP and ask about antibiotics until you can have it assessed.
Re: Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
I have had salivary stones. One was removed by my ENT doctor by manually manipulating it and then suctioning it out (it was the size of a bb). I still had pain so the did a scan and determined I still have a small stone. I was able to remove the infection with: [1] antibiotics; [2] sucking on lemonhead candy to increase saliva to flush the infection out; and [3] using a soft toothbrush on my gland to help express the infection. I could actually taste the bitterness as the infection was pushed out. After a week or two it was no longer a problem.
Hope this helps.

Re: Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
When I was about 7 I woke up with a small bubble under my tongue on bottom of my mouth where the soft tissue is, by noon this bubble was pushing my tongue to one side and popping out of my mouth. My parents took me to the dentist who put a needle in it and tore it open (hurt like a b_ _ _ h. It was back in a matter of days they took me to a MD. who surgically removed it, he said it was a blocked saliva gland and it never came back. That was 50+ years ago, I say go see a ENT or specialist. Good Luck.

I have never had a stone in my salivery gland, but I do have rocks in my head.
Re: Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
I have had a piece of salivary gland removed. A relative had surgery too because her stone wouldn't come out otherwise and it totally blocked a duct and if she ate anything sour, a painful goose egg sized lump filled up under her jawline that took hours to drain. If you continue in pain, I'd let an ENT deal with it. They see these things all the time and if they say to wait it out, you can maybe accept that a little better. Best wishes.

Re: Has anyone had a stone in their salivary gland?
I had a stone in my salivary gland which my ent removed - gland and all. It was pretty complicated due to the number of nerves etc in the area. I was in hospital for several days. Luckily, the scar is an area of the neck that it is now barely distinguishable. I have to point it out to people.
