Repairing a ResMed that's out of warranty

Post by Doc Laser » Sat Mar 25, 2006 8:27 pm

Hi Folks. I'm brand new here. Sorry if this is an old topic.

I've used a ResMed Auto Set Spirit for 2.5 years. It's just out of warranty and now smells like uncooked rice on a hot burner on the stove (don't ask how I know what burned uncooked rice smells like!). It's not an electrical burn smell, more like a cooking burn smell. Weird. Since the machine's out of warranty, I opened it up and sure enough, the smell is coming from some electrical parts near the air intake at the back of the unit.

Question 1: Where can you get something like this fixed? I live in Houston, Texas. The local ResMed dealer charges outrageous prices for everything and I'm without insurance; I'm hoping to find an independent repairer who will give me a quick turnaround.

Question 2: Is it wiser to buy a new one from an Internet dealer? I don't know if my 2.5 year old prescription would be any use to an American supplier; would a new machine be available from a Canadian supplier without a current prescription?

Thanks!

Mark

Greetings,

Usually, repairing a machine is not cost effective due to the internets very low prices. cpap.com takes prescriptions no matter how old they are, here is their FAQ on the topic:

https://www.cpap.com/cpap-faq/Prescript ... l#FGID-130

Resmed, Respironics and Puritan Bennett all have produced machines that are roughly a third the size of your current Spirit machine and have the same or improved functionality.

Here is a place to check out the sizing differences I'm referring to:

https://www.cpap.com/cpap-size-compare-select.php

Here are the most popular CPAP machines:

https://www.cpap.com/simple-find-cpap-p ... ected=CPAP

Here are the most popular Auto Adjusting CPAP machines:

https://www.cpap.com/simple-find-cpap-p ... d=AUTOCPAP

The internet has effectively set you free from having to deal with the high prices and poor service of your local provider. Enjoy.

Johnny

Mark, for a new machine, you won't find lower prices than cpap.com

If you're really lucky, you might spot one on ebay, but you would want to contact the seller immediately because many times ebay will pull the auction within 24 hours.

Also, you might post on this forum to see if anyone has a used machine they might want to sell. (I think I might have seen someone asking today for a machine - but he wanted an auto and the member had a straight cpap. You might check recent topics about a used machine for sale.

Mark, here is the info I mentioned. Contact TH and see if he was interested in selling one. Just click on PM at the bottom of his post, that takes you to the private message area, and you can write him in private.

Even though it is out of warranty. I would still contact ResMed just to make sure they will not repair it. Perhaps it is a component that they have identified as being a problem, and would be willing to repair it. You would also be helping the other ResMed customers by identifying a potential problem. You could also contact the FDA to let them know that a product is deficient. Your old prescription and the broken machine should allow you to get a new machine. Since you live in Houston I would give cpap.com a call to see if they can help you.

Can you elaborate on this comment. What would be the basis that justifies calling the FDA and branding the machine 'deficient' ?

very curious

Thanks for all of the good information, Folks.

Another question:

Can I re-use my old CPAP prescription from 2 1/2 years ago (the one that was used to get the ResMed Auto Scan Spirit that's gone bad already; see the top of this message string!) to get a new CPAP machine from an Online supplier?

If not, is there a better/easier way to get a new prescription than going back to the original sleep clinic that charged me an arm and a leg 2 1/2 years ago?

Thanks!

Prescriptions

Post by Moogy » Mon Mar 27, 2006 9:57 pm

Someone recently posted the information that cpap.com accepts prescriptions no matter when they were written.

Also, once you are on a CPAP, your regular family doctor will probably be glad to write you a prescription for a replacement,

"Someone" was Johnny Goodman, owner of cpap.com, hosts of this message board. And Johnny should certainly know!
