Suggestions for nasal membrane moisturizer?
Suggestions for nasal membrane moisturizer?
I'm going to be dialing back on humidification for a few days, and am wondering if there's anything that I can use to protect my nasal membranes from the problems that you have when they dry out too much, and that I could use at night when I'm sleeping.
I've read something about Lansinoh ointment and Ayr gel, but I'm not sure that they're exactly what I'm looking for, in terms of keeping my nasal membranes moist and protected at night.
Thanks for any help with this.

I have used Lansinoh for when i have had a very dry nasal cavity. i simply used a q-tip and spread the lansinoh up inside my nose. It is 100 % safe as nursing mothers use it on their nipples to keep them supple. If new babes can injest it then it wont hurt us. It can be purchased at walmart or any drug store in the baby isle next to the bottles etc. it cost about $10 and is very small tube but will last a year or more.a little goes a very long way. Don`t wimp out because I said its for nursing moms.....a lot of the guys here use it .

Re: Suggestions for nasal membrane moisturizer?
When I first started cpap, my mouth and nose were so dry. I found that drinking lots of water during the day helps keep you moist at night. All that water helps hydrate. I've heard different things like using Vicks vapor rub under your nose or a neti pot before bed. Those don't seem to be things that would keep you moist. I know during winter when my nose dries out I use petroleum jelly and that works really well to moisten and heal.
Hope that might help!

If it's OK for a baby to have in his mouth, it's OK anywhere.
(I've used (cow's) milk to wash a trace of hot sauce from a friend's eye--it worked.)

Re: Suggestions for nasal membrane moisturizer?
I would not use vicks or petroleum jelly it will degrade the silicone in your mask. That is the reason we suggest lansinoh as it is 100% lanolin....no petroleum jelly.Wonderbeastlett wrote:When I first started cpap, my mouth and nose were so dry. I have used NeilMed NasoGel drip free Gel Spray and its suggested on the label that this product is for CPAP users. You can also get it from cpap.com

Re: Suggestions for nasal membrane moisturizer?
Yep, NeilMed gel spray is my vote too -- I buy it at the local Rite-Aid drug store. It has more "staying power" than a regular saline nasal spray. I've also used Lansinoh for irritation, but the gel spray can get up further into the nasal passages.sol wrote:I have used NeilMed NasoGel drip free Gel Spray and its suggested on the label that this product is for CPAP users. IF you promise not to over analyze it you could use what is called nasal saline sprayRogerSC wrote:I'm going to be dialing back on humidification for a few days, and am wondering if there's anything that I can use to protect my nasal membranes from the problems that you have when they dry out too much, and that I could use at night when I'm sleeping.

Yes stay away from any product containing Vaseline often listed as petroleum jelly or petrolatum.
I was using Chapstick on my lips and my mask was turning yellow and degrading. Then I saw someone posted here about the petroleum jelly and recommended a generic brand of Bert's Bees lipbalm from Walgreen. That is all I use now and my new mask is not yellowing.

IMO anyone on cpap should have nasal saline right next to their mask.

Re: Suggestions for nasal membrane moisturizer?
I use a combination of nasal saline spray and Ayr gel. I found either one by themselves is not enough, but the two together do a great job.
Re: Suggestions for nasal membrane moisturizer?
I have very sensitive skin and almost always react to things. So I just use a saline spray (make sure there are NO inactive ingredients like preservatives) and drink plenty of fluids. That saved me during a month long titration with Kaiser using a home machine with no humidifier.

Re: Suggestions for nasal membrane moisturizer?
When I was starting out, I used a product called Nozoil. I found it better than Lansinoh and the nasal spray made it easier to apply too.
http://www.enttech.com.au/products/nozoil
It's specifically designed for CPAP/oxygen use. However, I think it is a bit hard to get in the US.
