Anyone tried this mouthpiece?

Post by kaiasgram » Fri Aug 03, 2012 3:17 pm

I'm curious if anyone has tried the mouth guard discussed here, about two and a half minutes into the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hK2uE07b ... ature=plcp

The company is Century Martial Arts.

I have a custom made night guard, it's great for my clenching probem but doesn't do anything to help me keep my mouth closed. I use a chinstrap -- ouchy on my jaw. And my sensitive skin would not do well with taping. I may just have to surrender to a FFM, but before I do I thought I'd see if anyone has any info about this mouthpiece. Thanks!

Thanks Froggie! I figure somebody must have tried this thing as an alternative to taping, but I could be wrong.

In the past it have been some post about mouth guards, now the system doesn't allow me to make the search.

What people used was the $1.00 Walmart's Wilson boil and bite football mouth guard double layer, only for the upper teeth. There is some like the one in the video with holes in the middle but those holes will let the pressure leak, the guy says you can put the plug but I don't know how can you close the lips with that thing there.

What somebody explained is she didn't know why it helped her to keep the mouth closed but it did. I tried and I trained my tongue to stays in the roof of the mouth and it work for me for some time, I even don't remember why I stopped using it maybe it was the tooth pain which distracted me from using it.

What I noticed is I could have the mouth open but because the tong makes a suction against the roof of the mouth and the mouth guard the air didn't leak. Coincidentally, this afternoon I boiled a double layer model which I will try this night, I had a single layer which was good (before tooth pain) but I imagine the double layer could be better if you use something for the clenching problem.

I cut the excess of material before boil it, to make it lower (my gums are short) because it was very uncomfortable for me to use it as it comes.

Good night
rosie

Here the results with the Wilson football double density mouthguard.

AHI= 0.87, leaks= 0.0 No leaks at all but I need to boil it again because it is too tight in the front, I woke up with sore teeth and gums . If I had no leaks at all for the first time I remember it seems maybe I'm mouth breathing more than I imagine. The worst is that I woke up in the middle of the night drooling , we have interesting conversation subjects isn't it?

I have the impression when you are working your mouth guard (boil and bite treatment) and you take it from your mouth and put it on the cold water it shrinks and becomes a bit tight. I will boil it again, put it on my mouth and let it there without make pressure until it cools down to see if it finish less tight.

I noticed something I will try to remember and correct for the next time I boil and bite a new mouth guard. As you imagine we prepare the mouth guard standing maybe in front of the kitchen, there your jaws are biting in a normal position.

The issue is when you lie down in your bed your lower jaw back off and when you bit on the mouth guard you notice the imprints made while you was standing are more advanced and the teeth doesn't fall on it. The lower teeth bite over a higher back contour of the mouth guard, I think it makes toggle a bit the mouth guard and puts pressure on the front teeth. IMHO This is the first time I notice it. If it was a double mouth guard I imagine the lower jaw wouldn't back off, this is something to verify.

I readjusted the mouth guard (boil again and bite a bit).

AHI=0.55 lower than yesterday, I had some leaks but nothing really to scare, the tooth and gums were way less painful.

I'm starting to think I will need to go see the dentist for a real mouth guard, any way the tooth is less painful at touch today than the days before. I need to train myself to sleep with a mouth guard, the mouth closed and the tongue on the roof of the mouth as in the first times. The FFM had made loss the habit to sleep with the mouth closed etc

I think the boil and bite is something that would be considered for mouth breathers you never know it could maybe help some of you.

Question: if I go to my dentist and ask for a mouth guard to help my OSA and keep my mouth closed, what exactly am I asking her for? Is there a brand name for these dentist-made devices? A brand that people like better than another?

i smiled when I read this because I went browsing through the sports section at walmart yesterday and bought an Everlast mouth guard that looks just like this century one. I have not boiled it to fit yet, or worn it to sleep, but the middle piece does come out. According to the directions though, you don't take out the mouth piece until the piece is boiled and fitted. Hope it helps a little with leaks, because I am still resisting taping my mouth due to claustrophobia issues.

I dont know how to add a link so I hope this works.

I don't know a name or brand for the mouth guards made by the dentists. I think they make a print and sent it to a laboratory to make the mouth guard. Last time I make made one that's what the dentist did.

What I read is there is different kinds of mouth guards and some are rigid in the side you bite. The one I have is made from an almost transparent kind of like ruber silicon whatever not rigid. Because of that when I bite asleep I twist the thing and make pressure over the sensitive tooth and it doesn't help at all it makes the opposite effect. Mine is also very thin and doesn't disturbs your mouth to close as does the Wilson football mouthguard which is thick and more rigid.

As I told in one of the first post, one year ago or more some members talk about the mouth guard as a solution they found to keep the mouth shut it takes a bit of training but it could work for some people, the fact of having that thing inside the mouth make us to unconsciously keep it closed weird stuff

I have to get to bed. Look up my nightguard on the Internet, called a Nite Guard. Have had it for several years.
Helps with OSA and TMJ.

texmels, what is the lifespan of this mouthguard? I hear you take the "plug" out if you use a FF mask, but leave it in if you use a nasal or nasal pillow mask to prevent mouth breathing. Does it claim to help with clenching? I have a custom made night guard from my dentist but it does not help keep my mouth closed. I'd love to ditch my chinstrap as it hurts my jaw, but don't want dental problems as a result of using an inferior mouth guard. Your thoughts are most welcome based on your experience -- thanks.

Kaiasgram, actually I did not do any extra research on this mouth piece before I bought it. i was browsing in the walmart and came across it. i thought to try it first only as a cheaper alternative before investing into a more expensive mouth guard or having one made by the dentist.

So, I ended up boiling it and trying to fit it last night. The instructions say, put it into boiling water for no more than 10 secs then into cold water for no more than 2 secs. Then there are the instructions on how to suck in the mouth piece to mold it to the front of your teeth, and also to push your tongue on it from the back. If that doesn't work at first, you are to repeat the steps until it fits. I thought was not doing it right because it did not soften the first 2 times, so I asked my husband to help me. Well...after 5 attempts doing this hot and cold dunk/moulding process, the damned thing never softened or molded even a little. I have officially tossed that piece of crap in the trash. Lesson learned, sometimes you really do get what you pay for! lol!
