Comfort & Pillow Height/Firmness

Post by PajamaGuy » Tue Aug 07, 2012 5:37 am

Just a personal observation - FWIW

I spent the last 3 nights on a CPAPMax pillow from Contour. It felt very good although it's much firmer and a tad taller than my pre-CPAP memory foam pillow. Last night I removed the 3/4" center piece of foam. BIG mistake (for me)! It became much softer than I would have thought, AND I really noticed the difference in height. AND I had more trouble keeping my mask adjusted. The spacer foam is going back in tonight!

I think that if I wasn't wearing a mask that I would have compensated for the height/softness by changing the position of my head automatically - something I can no longer do because of the mask.

I say this because, like me, there may be some other new hoseheads out there who are finding there's a lot of "getting-used-to" this whole new life. Try different pillow heights AND firmness - it just may help your transition.

Pillows need to come in more sizes/heights.
A small frame such as mine may sleep on a tall pillow and wake up with an excruciatingly sore neck.
Ergonomics is prime.

I've used a buckwheat hull pillow for years (long before CPAP started for me). When I got my CPAP, I found that the hulls made for a great experience, as they supported my head, but also seemed to get out of the way of the mask when I turned on my side.

Lots of success stories with the CPAP pillows as well, so I guess it comes down to what works best for you =)
