How Do I Effectively Clean My Mask Tube?

Post by BigLou » Mon Aug 27, 2012 8:58 pm

Hi veterans and newbies ( like me) alike. I am almost 3 months in now and have noticed this crystalline-like greasy residue between the inside ribs of my mask tube. Does anyone have a trick on how to clean off the residue without damaging the tube? I use baby shampoo every other day and Control 3 disinfectant weekly. Just need to mechanically scrub the inside of the tube. Same goes for ClimateLine tubing (as we all know the standard tube brush is too wide), but no grungies in here as of yet! Thanks.

The short hose part of the mask? I just use hot water..as hot as I can stand it. Never have seen anything nasty in there but if I did maybe a toothbrush or something similar pushed up and through the hose. Maybe with a rag pushed from one end to the other along with copious amounts of hot water.

Yes, the short hose part of the mask. Will try super skinny toothbrush. I really am a bit nervous using super hot water on any of my tubing though Pugs....due to possible release of BPA's ? or what ever toxins may be present in the tube plastic. We really don't know what's in there. Have been to the ResMed site and read their vague info on PAP component composition.

Thanks Pugs! My wife had a very skinny toothbrush that her dentist gave her (more like the size for a baby..cheapo dentist) and that slipped right in the tube w/o effort. Will put a small piece of CPAP wipe on the surface of the brush after a short soak in the detergent to loosen up the debris.

How about a long strip of towelling pushed in with something or other and then having someone else hold the tube, pull the towel back and forth inside it til gunk is scrubbed off (and then rinse afterward)?

My main hose fits over the kitchen sink faucet and I run hot water through it until its too hot to hold. If the mask is made in Australia, it should be BPA free. If the chemicals it may release are a concern, do this first thing in the morning with increasing heat levels every day. Heat will just speed up any chemical process that will happen over time anyway so you can control it with heat.

I use Palmolive dish soap in my washable equipment. I've been using it for decades on glasses and two decades on a silicone diving mask so I trust it on the types of plastics in this kind of gear.

If you soak your hose, try to spiral it so that if fills completely with water. Most manufactures don't recommend soaking in alcohol or white vinegar but one is anti-bacterial and the other is anti-fungal and nether seem to hurt most things according to the people who have tried it. I find a vinegar bath helps oily feeling on my masks but I wash the mask after the soak. Just don't try anything unusual if you don't have access to a spare or replacement.

Distilled water is also very good at dissolving things ... after all water has dissolved mountains... it just takes lots of time.
