CPAP machines and cigarette smoke

Post by PaulB1979_CANADA » Thu Oct 25, 2012 10:51 am

Hi everyone.

Today I would like to talk about tobacco smoke. Now my situation may not reflect everyone else's, but I feel the need to talk about it.

Now the way I see it, a CPAP will function in the same manner as a Air Purifier machine. That can get annoying If you are a non-smoker, or someone who has quit or trying to quit and have a partner who smokes around the house, or even the bedroom.

Now of course it will take a bit of time for the smoking partner to get used to
The CPAP, but when do we the users say enough is enough.

This is a problem I am currently having with my wife. I woke up to her smoking next to me in bed while I was sleeping plugged into my CPAP. It was a rude awakening.

We talked and She says she understands, then I sat up, and guess what, she lit up another smoke out of habit... Grrrr..

Had anyone had this problem?
Figured out How to explain without any headaches?...

Sometimes its hard to break old habits..

she's going to have to quit for herself and her own reasons. quitting smoking for someone else almost never works long term. if you force the issue it becomes worse. there really is no good answer here.

Compromise maybe for the time being???
No smoking in the bedroom.
It will still suck the odor from the other rooms where smoking is likely to occur but won't be quite so strong.

Aromatherapy at the air intake...just to help with the odor a bit????
One of those air purifying things that is supposed to clean out even cigarette smoke in the bedroom maybe?

You are truck driver...how often are you home?

I didn't think anybody smoked in bed anymore! Talk about fire hazards! It is a good way to get killed in a truly ugly manner.

No smoking in the bed room AT ALL. Ever.
Get a Heppa filter machine for the bedroom.

They have the whole house and the great white outdoors to do it in.

10 days on, 4 Days off.

That's a couple of good ideals.. But in the end, There should be no smoking in the bedroom.. At least that..

Its a new situation, I gotta give it time, and her too.

Once the odor from the cigarette gets into the machine...it is virtually impossable to get it out. You will smell it forever.

She smokes in bed while you're trying to sleep? Wow, talk about being inconsiderate.

Not in the bedroom is a reasonable request. You don't want that smell in your machine.

At the moment, yes she does. I used to smoke too, but never in our bedroom.

I have to take into consideration that thus us new to her too. A big change.

Another gentle discussion and Im sure it will change.

For now I guess I need to find ways to kill the odor. Arathetapy sounds quite intetesting

Aromatherapy is kind of nice if you like that sort of thing.
Doesn't have to be fancy. A few drops of your favorite essential oil on a cotton ball placed on something (not to harm wood finish of table) near the air intake is rather pleasant. If you get too much and odor is a little too strong you can move it away from the air intake just a bit. Don't put the oil in the water though. While I am not so sure the oil can hitch a ride on the moisture going into your lungs the oil for sure will make a mess of the tank on the inside which would require more work cleaning and I never want to do more work than necessary.

A lot of the forum members like the Pur Sleep essential oils.

I got the starter kit a while back and some of them I liked and some of them were rather yucky to me.
I tend to go for floral scents...don't care at all for food scents. Some of the minty ones were quite powerful.

Good luck sir.

I've never smoked but my wife used to. She quit ~25 years ago, we've been married for 35 years. I know that if during the time that she smoked, if she had lit up in bed while I was trying to sleep, we would certainly have had a conversation but it wouldn't have been described as a gentle one.

I slept in a motel in a smoking room - no one with our group smoked, just a matter of needing a room quick due to mis-scheduling. I got the smoke smell out of my machine, finally using PurSleep CLEAR scent. It took some time, but after no more exposure to smoke, my 'smell' cleared up. I would suggest no more smoking in bed - as others have said its a fire waiting to happen. I would ask her not to smoke in bed while you are gone too, the smell will clear from your machine faster that way.
