Any water you can drink is "safe" for you. It may leave a mineral deposit in the humidifier however, which is the real reason you are told to use distilled water.

Distilled water is much cheaper to purchase as well. I get mine from Target for 89 cents a gallon.

Distilled is best if you can get it easily. It's hard to find in a lot of areas outside the US.

If it's not distilled, you need to dump the water out daily, clean the tank more often and probably replace the tank more often.

Bottled water may or may not have fewer minerals than tap water. Sometimes, they actually add minerals to bottled water to improve the taste. Bottled water is often purified tap water, but they may not be removing the minerals, just solids and certain chemicals.

As others have said, if you can get distilled water, that is your best bet, but if you are checking in to a hotel and it's closing on midnight, and you have easy access to bottled drinking water, use that. It is certainly better than tap water.
