Air Bubble Forming in Throat
Air Bubble Forming in Throat
Hi again. Well I finally figured out what is happening when I feel as if the CPAP is choaking me. There seems to be a air pocket forming in my throat when I lay down. This forms into some sort of blockage in my airway. I don't know why it is happening, but when I burp it seems to go away, I burp several times then fall alseep. I am also finding that I wake up in the middle of the night and take the CPAP off set it on my pillow and then fall back asleep. I then have a Apnea moment and wake up to find that I've removed the CPAP again! This goes on all night! This is why I had the surgery in the beginning because the machine felt as if it was choaking me...now what!
Without understanding what is really going on, based on your description, i will contribute my $0.02 worth. Have you tried sleeping in a somewhat upright position? Perhaps the subtle interaction of gravity and the unique geometry of your nasopharyngeobronchotrachoalveolar situation is contributing to the problem you describe. Try it in an easy chair or recliner with lots of pillows. You will probably need to be a little bit experimental with this.
Not as dumb as it sounds. Back in the "olden days", (before electric nose blowers were invented), sleeping upright was sometimes prescribed as a treatment for OSA. (I don't remember when OSA was invented? I blame Darwin). If it works out, there are beds made for upright sleepers.

Could be pressurized CPAP air is getting past the esophagus and even accumulating there. If so this might be how CPAP induced "aerophagia" behaves and feels for you.
Aerophagia does not necessarily manifest the same for all of us. You might want to search this message board for aerophagia to see how others are coping with it.

Do you suffer from, or with, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), more commonly known as Reflux/Heartburn?
I do and, if you do, since one cause or contributing factor is hiatal hernia and a cause of factor in hiatal hernia is obesity (me) and related stomach distension it might be a part of your problem. One of the things that can help this is sleeping with the head/upper body elevated.

DSMIf so turn cflex off for a couple of nights.
Interesting, and worth a try.
Any reasoning behind it or is it just something you discovered on your own.
I'm Just curious but I will give it a shot.

Hello all. I just received a new CPAP machine and will post what brand it is. I sleep on about 6 pillows, my hubby often teases that he does not know how I am able to sleep sitting up...I've always found this comfortable. I have a good feeling that I am going to learn a great deal about my sleep apnea here. There are several terms posted to my original post that I have to look up. More tomorrow. Now this does not happen every night but most.
Thanks everybody.
