CPAP hose and popping sound problem (again

Post by sleepyinmississippi » Sun Dec 16, 2012 9:54 pm

Hello.
My CPAP hose is making a popping sound (again). I aired out the hose yesterday--and it's still making the noise and I can't sleep like that!
How do I make it stop--and how can I avoid this, as it seems to happen every time I fill the humidifier with water (though the problem is worse this time)?
Thanks--and please excuse multiple posts of this question by me--but I'm not sure my previous attempts at posting today have worked (I can't find those posts or replies to them).
Thank you.

I'll hazard a guess, though my experience is limited.

I have a heated hose, so I had little experience with "rain out" but experienced it with my travel machine which doesn't have a heated hose. The tips I've read include putting the hose in a cover or "hose cozy" or under the covers to keep the temperature difference minimized so condensation doesn't happen. One other tip was to put the machine closer to the floor.

If that's not it, I'm at a loss, sorry.

Mine did that one night when I first started cpap and I figured it our pretty quickly. When you fill the H5i to the MAX line, every time air blows over the top of the water a little water gets pulled into the hose. So, the hose is blocked with water. The popping sound is air moving through the water like a bubble popping.

I fill my H5i to the next line down from MAX. That will cure the issue. Did you notice your hose full of water?

It would be nice to know what machine and humidifier you have, but,....The popping is likely from the water in the hose...Be sure you haven't over filled the humidifier, put the CPAP below the level of your bed, try to use a hose management system to route the hose overhead.

To Heavylids,
It appears I did fill up the humidier with too much water and have since emptied it a bit. I'm hoping that makes a difference.
Also, another respondent asked me for the specs of my machine. Though I thought I did that weeks ago, I will have to do that again tomorrow.
I do, however, have a Remstar Respironics PHillips with a heated humidifier (though I know there are other specs I need to post--and will do so tomorrow as I can't remember where to look for them.)
I appreciate everyone's help--and anticipate sleeping better tonight! Will keep you informed tomorrow.

popping sound problem and CLOSURE

Post by sleepyinmississippi » Tue Dec 18, 2012 7:10 pm

To sleepylids,
Partially emptying the humidifier ended the popping sound--I slept great last night!
Thank you,

The next time it happens, shut it off, disconnect the hose from the machine and your mask, being careful to keep the ends of the hose up high to keep any water in the hose from pouring out. Then try to maneuver the hose such that you'll pour any water out of the hose and be able to see it.

Once you confirm it's water in the hose, you'll know it's the "rainout" problem, and you can use the standard tricks to reduce rainout. Lots of folks have to fight rainout and there are lots of techniques to do so.
