CPAP mask noise (when I exhale)
Hi.
I have a Remstar Respironics System 1 CPAP machine with a heated humidifier.
I use a Remstar Easylife mask.
Suddenly (as of last night), the mask makes a lot of noise each time I exhale (I don't remember this ever happening before, though I don't know why this would suddenly start happening after 4 months.)
Any ideas of how to change this? Or am I just oversensitive to the CPAP noises all of a sudden?
Thanks,
Sleepyinmississippi

Re: CPAP mask noise (when I exhale)
What does it sound like? Is it a leaking sound? "Face Fart"? Or just a loud exhalation type sound?
If the latter, the hose may have been resting on your pillow or another surface, and that causes the sound to magnify--it's called "conducted" noise. If you hear it again, fiddle with the hose, check for leaks, and then try to describe the sound if neither of those steps fixes it.

Mine sorta "clicks"... its the check valve in the mask that prevents backwards flow and directs the exhale thru the vent. I took a while to get used to. Sheriff

Re: CPAP mask noise (when I exhale)
Jaknitz and Sherriff Buford,
Thanks for the help. And to Jaknitz--it's a loud exhalation noise. I'm staying with family for the holidays-and have put my CPAP hose on a table (along with the CPAP). Guess that's why I suddenly have this problem.
I will change things around--thanks for your help.

Try laying it on a cushion.

sleepyinmississippi,
When you get time, it would be helpful to add your machine, humidifier & mask type under your user control panel profile. That way when forum members are helping you, it give us that info without having to ask you each time. Notice the blue type under each of our posts.
I have had the same type noise when my hose gets twisted on a hard surface. Some masks also make a strange exhale noise. Since I use various masks, I've noticed some are louder than others.
Hope you are having a nice visit with your family.
Jen

Desensitization over time is a great thing to behold. Every little sound, face fart, whistle or whoosh would wake me up... now I am simply used to it and nothing much noise-wise bothers me. I have my other issues and sleep problems but now, thankfully, machine and mask noise aren't among them. Anyway, I know at this stage of your therapy this advice is kinda cold comfort, but desensitization happened to a lot of folks on this forum.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Sometimes I wake up and all the sounds seem to be magnified.
Then I roll onto my good ear, and it's quiet again.

It can be very annoying at first, but soon you get so used to the sound you can't go to sleep without it! Hang in there, it will get better with time.Sir NoddinOff wrote:Desensitization over time is a great thing to behold. Re: CPAP mask noise (when I exhale)
True. After nearly 5 months of use my S9 started whistling with every exhale. Oh joy. I tried various things to get it to stop but I am powerless over it! However, I hardly notice it anymore -- it's still there but now I would actually have to pay attention to hear it.Sir NoddinOff wrote:Desensitization over time is a great thing to behold. When I travel I carry large elastic headbands and some command hooks so I can hang my hose. So far I haven't had to use the command hooks because the places we've stayed all have hanging bedside lamps and I just hook my elastic e bands on those and put the hose through.

Re: CPAP mask noise (when I exhale)
My mask (I use the same one) started making noise in the middle of the night. I found that the Inner-Cushion was not seated correctly in the Outer-Cushion. Once seated correctly the sound went away.sleepyinmississippi wrote: Suddenly (as of last night), the mask makes a lot of noise each time I exhale (I don't remember this ever happening before, though I don't know why this would suddenly start happening after 4 months.)
Re: CPAP mask noise (when I exhale)
Also check to make sure the CPAP filters ( black and white ) haven't popped out of their slot.

To jlmoorekcmo:
How do you check to see if the inner cushion of the mask is fitted properly? I looked at my mask and nothing seems out of order--but I'm certainly not sure of that.
Chris--where is the white filter? I can find the black one but not the white one.
Thank you all for your help!

Re: CPAP mask noise (when I exhale)
You take both cushions out of plastic frame & look at the back side.
Hope one of these videos will help.
