Silicone Free Skin Care

Post by kismet210 » Tue Dec 25, 2012 6:31 pm

When I got my mask I was told to use only silicone free skin care products on my face at night so the silicone seal on the mask wouldn't be damaged and last a lot longer. I did some research on the web to see what I could find. There are several web sites that list all of the different descriptions/names for silicone and their uses. On my search I also came across a website for Korres skin care products. They are made in Greece and almost the entire line is silicone free. In Canada so far I've found the line is available in Shopper's Drug Mart. I've found you only need a small amount of product as well, so it lasts. You can enter your own local info to see where the line might be available to you. Has anyone found any other skin care products out there that are silicone free?

It has to be petroleum free. The mask is made of silicon and petroleum products degrade silicon. Things like Vaseline is a petroleum product. Find natural based creams.

Thank you for that! I'll be doing some more research for sure!

Lanolin-and vegetable oil based products are safe.
Avoid petrolatum and mineral oil.

Petroleum based products will deteriorate latex items -- which is not present in silicone based cpap gear.

Liquid silicone based products however will damage solid silicone items. So cosmetics or ointments containing silicone (assuming any do) could be harmful to the silicone plastics in cpap gear.

Silicone does have a great affinity toward gases, especially oxygen,
and any aromatic compound will tend to permanently bond to it.
I would avoid Vaseline anyway just because it's not really good for the skin.
I have heard of silicone used in hair care products, but not skin care--to lend shine.
This might, IMO, interfere with the "tackiness" that makes silicone seal nicely. (YMMV)

No, it will degrade silicon too. As per manufacturers.

No, it will degrade silicon too. As per manufacturers.

Per ResMed:
•Wash mask daily according to user guide instructions, with a product that you would use to wash your face. Use mild soap and warm water (30°C/86°F)
•Wash face before bed (suggested - pH neutral) to remove excess facial oils
•Avoid using facial lotions and creams where your mask comes into contact with your face, as these products may interfere with mask seal and potentially degrade the quality of the cushion over time.

Cautions
•Do not use solutions containing vinegar, bleach, chlorine, alcohol, aromatics, moisturizers, antibacterial agents or scented oils to clean any part of the system or air tubing. These solutions may cause damage and reduce the life of the product

Per Respironics:
Cleaning the Respironics Comfort Gel Mask
Clean the Respironics Comfort Gel Nasal Mask prior to using any of the disinfection or sterilization methods listed below.
Remove the headgear and spacer from Respironics ComfortGel Mask, if appropriate.
Soak the parts in a commercially available enzymatic cleaner e.g. Klenzyme.
Clean the Comfort Gel Mask with a soft bristle brush in a solution of cool tap water and a commercially, available anionic detergent e.g. Manu Klenz. Do not use cleaning products that contain conditioners or moisturizers because they will leave a residue.
Rinse Comfort Gel nasal mask thoroughly under cool running tap water. Air dry.
If adhering substances have not been adequately removed, replace the ComfortGel Mask.

Unfortunately there is not a lot of clarity on this issue. Petroleum based creams and products will not hurt silicone, but could leave a residue and interefere with the seal. None of the manufacturers instructions I have seen provide explicit guidance. They just say to 'avoid moisturizers.' Which in winter, is not so helpful.

Liquid silicone products can literally melt solid silicone objects, over time. -- Although in face moisturizers, I am sure the concentration of silicone is very, very low, so it may not really even be an issue over the average lifespan of a cushion (3 months? 6 months?)

I don't know what kind of toys Santa brought you for Christmas, but believe me, there's a whole class of them where you never ever get liquid silicone on them or they will be damaged.... Petroleum-based, or natural oils or water based products are fine, but never ever liquid silicone. The same chemistry should apply to silicone cpap items.

Perhaps the best thing would be to simply use water based facial moisturizers like Eucerin or something. I'm sure the pharmacist can say whether a product contains silicone components or not.
