Vitamin D storage temperatures
Vitamin D storage temperatures
I've been wondering why so many people's Vid D levels don't go up after they start taking supplements. I was talking to a local doctor about Vit
D levels and he was saying that they go down for many of his patients around the time that summer starts when they get more sun and are taking extra. So I started looking into why that might be.
One bottle says keep it below 25 deg C (75 deg F) and a web search of storage temperatures shows that between 15 and 30 deg C is needed which is 59 to 86 deg F. My house gets hotter than that in the summer. Its been a cold rainy day here today at its 23.7C at midnight.
Vit D in milk gets cooked off in the pasteurisation process which is why it is added but milk needs to stay below 4 deg C (40 F) or else it goes bad quickly.
So is my milk providing little Vit D since it is too cold and are my pills useless because they got to warm? Vit issues started as warm milk became rare and high temp pasteurisation became more common. How cool were the milk trucks in the 1950s and 1960s and how warm was the milk when delivered?
Does anyone have any ideas or real sources of info about this?

Re: Vitamin D storage temperatures
I can't speak to those temperature requirements, but I have read that it is harder to increase Vitamin D with the OTC capsules than with the liquid form of Vitamin D. Know however, that a low dose like 1000 IU a day will not increase your D3 significantly. I originally was told to take 1000 IU per day by my GP, but when I saw a naturopath doctor, she told me that it would take years at that dose to get my levels up to where they should be.
In a few months on the liquid D3 drops I raised my D3 from 11 to 50 (on a dose of 6000 IU per day). Of course, you should follow your doctors dosage instructions, but if you are really low and they only prescribe 1000-2000 IU a day, be aware that it will take you a long time to get there at that dose.
You can find D3 drops at Whole Foods or Amazon. Local pharmacies may not stock them, but you could probably order them.

I keep mine in the fridge ... right next to my DHA capsules, the fish oil, and probiotics.

Re: Vitamin D storage temperatures
I was taking an OTC Vitamin D3 supplement for several months and it didn't move my numbers up at all. My rheumatologist just shifted me over to a new protocol where I'll be taking 50,000 IU (of D2) once a week for a month, and then every other week for two additional months; hopefully that will do the trick. If it doesn't, then they need to start looking for other explanations for the deficiency.
I am resisting the temptation to start scouring the Internet for all the dire possibilities that might imply. One day at time, right?

Randy, what is your opinion on the liquid soft? Are they similar enough to the liquid drops?

Re: Vitamin D storage temperatures
I'm not sure what you mean. I am taking the drops (LiquiD3). By "liquid soft" do you mean soft gel capsules?Kitatonic wrote:Randy, what is your opinion on the liquid soft? Are they similar enough to the liquid drops?
My understanding is that any D3 in capsule form will not absorb as well in the body as the liquid drops that you put on your tongue. The drops I am using have a concentration of 2000 IU per drop, but they come in different strengths.
I am using this one: http://www.amazon.com/Rx-Vitamins-Liqui ... d3+vitamin
Another thing to keep in mind is that in many parts of the US (Florida and Hawaii being exceptions), sunlight is more scarce during the winter months, and our bodies make hardly any Vitamin D. So most people need to supplement if they don't want to be low. My doctor likes to see 60-80 as a normal range; in January of 2012 my level was 11. After 3 months I got it up to 50, and at last reading in Nov. 2012 I was in the high 60s.

Yes, liquid softgel

I did not understand that you use the liquid sublingually, which obviously you could not do with a liquid in a capsule. Are the other capsules useless or just not as efficacious? I do not like droppers especially for my elderly mother.

Ok, I understand. The softgels are not recommended if you are looking to increase Vitamin D levels. The consensus is that they are not efficacious, or at least significantly less efficacious than the liquid drops.
The drops are taken on the tongue (not sublingually, or under the tongue).
I understand how the drops can be problematic for an elderly person with poor coordination, since it's important that the drops are counted (and that you give drops, not droppersful (!!)...
If you see your mother everyday and can give her the drops yourself, I'd do that. Otherwise go with the softgels and hope for the best. As someone mentioned above, there is also a weekly megadose available by prescription; it's D2 and comes in a 40,000 IU pill, I think. Some have reported success with it but it is not considered to be better than daily D3 drops.

Re: Vitamin D storage temperatures
Thanks, Randy. I just ordered what you have and will just give this to my mom. My VitD level was 50, so I might take a dose occasionally.

If you (or she) are going to take more than 2000 IU a day (one drop), make sure you are under a doctor's supervision and getting a blood test to check levels every 90 days.Kitatonic wrote:Thanks, Randy.
