Whistling Noise

Post by waudio1 » Thu Jun 13, 2013 10:30 am

My husband reports a whistling noise when I am sleeping with the CPAP. He says it sounds like a dentists drill and it is keeping him awake almost as much as my snoring did in the past. My leak rate is fine and my AHI is 1 or under every night. I'm using the Swift FX for her and it is working well for me. I would consider trying a different mask if I thought that would fix the problem. I thought it might just be my husband being overly sensitive but I spent a night in a hotel room with my two teenage daughters and they said it was pretty loud as well. Any suggestions?

I have a passover humidifier I use, without water, to baffle the air flow and cut down on the whistles.

I sometimes hear a faint whistle from the slimline tube. Perhaps a tube cover would baffle the sound that bothers him?

(I kinda like the sound)

Ask him to try to identify exactly where the whistling is coming from the next time it happens.
I get a whistle if my nasal pillows get crimped. I can hear it myself when that happens.
Some people get a whistle when a little moisture gets in the vent holes.
You are using a PR S1 machine..so it isn't known to whistle or make bird calls like the S9 is ...
But see if he can pinpoint the source and then maybe we can figure out how to stop it.

Whistling isn't normal and we can't have it disrupting spouse's sleep.

Maybe try a different size nasal pillow just to see what happens.
Also...take a toothbrush and give the vent holes a good scrubbing just in cause one or more is partially blocked by something.

Oh...has he always heard the whistle or is this a new thing?

White noise might also help, especially with the higher-end (dentist's drill) range of sound.

Actually, pink noise is even more effective.

Ahh, blessed pink noise.

I switched from the swift fx because my wife complained of a whistle it was making. I couldn't hear it but it really bothered her. I finally got a respironics opti-life mask that she says doesn't whistle.

I started out with the Wisp and he didn't complain as much about the noise. I like the Swift FX better than the Wisp and I suspect the noise is from the mask but I'm not sure. Maybe I will go back to the Wisp for tonight and see what happens. I get some condensation in the mask but not what I would consider alot - I was wondering if that was causing the noise. I don't think it is coming from the machine - the way he describes it is coming from the mask when I breathe. Although I will ask him to give me more details.

Swift FX is known for whistling from where the swivel connects to the mask. You can try some hose management by routing the hose to hang up over your head. Do a forum search for hose management.

Could it be you're snoring a little?

my swift FX whistles like mad when the room is cold. I found having hose covers really helped.
