Bloody nose? More Humidity needed?
I just got daughter back to sleep. Her nose was bleeding. Is this a sign I should turn up her humidity? It's on 2 right now.

I don't know for certain, but I would agree with your thinking about upping the humidity. I was actually diagnosed with apnea after having a series of bloody noses which landed me in the emergency room. I was getting them due to dry air with some traveling to desert environments. Since I've been on cpap with my humidity set on auto, I have had no further trouble.

Re: Bloody nose? More Humidity needed?
They pretty much told me 'Do with what she needs' for the humidity but didn't give me any information. It's really hot right now and our A/C is going 24/7 which I' m sure probably dries out the air. I can bump her up to a 3 and see how that goes.ughwhatname wrote:SleepyonMagnoliaSt wrote:I just got daughter back to sleep. Her nose was bleeding. Is this a sign I should turn up her humidity? Yeah, with AC running all the time, I'd say its a dry air problem. Is there an auto feature so she gets consistent humidity?SleepyonMagnoliaSt wrote:They pretty much told me 'Do with what she needs' for the humidity but didn't give me any information. Re: Bloody nose? More Humidity needed?
The humidity settings on her machine go up to 5 no auto that I know of? They set it at 2 when they sent it home. It's really easy to bump it up but I just don't want to give her too MUCH humidity either.ughwhatname wrote:Yeah, with AC running all the time, I'd say its a dry air problem. Re: Bloody nose? More Humidity needed?
I'm no expert, but I don't know that too much humidity would be a problem. Think sitting in a steam room. That's pretty humid air, and its fine. When I have a cold, I turn up the humiditiy pretty high, which seems to help when I'm stuffed up.SleepyonMagnoliaSt wrote:The humidity settings on her machine go up to 5 no auto that I know of? That's true!! Thank you! I didn't even think of that. I did turn her up to 3 so I'll see how she does on this and if needed I can bump it up againughwhatname wrote:I'm no expert, but I don't know that too much humidity would be a problem. Re: Bloody nose? More Humidity needed?
She has a 60 series machine but sounds like no heated hose option since you mention 5 settings available on the humidifier.
The default mode of operation for the PR System One machine (without heated hose) is the new humidification system and it uses some sensors to try to keep humidity fairly constant. It uses less heat and less water and at a setting of 2, which is really relatively low, and with the dry air, probably isn't enough added moisture.
The nasal membranes get dried out and a little cracked and blood vessels break.
I live in SW Missouri...so not a dry area by any means when it comes to humidity but when using the new system one humidification system (and not the heated hose) I have to use a setting of 5 and that barely gets the job done for me.
The heated hose option on the PR S1 machines allows for more customization of the humidity and temperature of the air in the hose.
Something you might want to look at this winter when the air is also typically drier and bedroom temps are typically lower.
When the heated hose is attached there are 2 choices on the humidifier..one for humidity delivered and one for temperature.

From above
"This humidifier offers three levels of humidification (70, 80 or 90 percent) and the heated tube has five levels of temperature available, ranging from 4 to 16 degrees above the room temperature. These two features work together to deliver the optimum humidification level at the mask. "
If the heated hose is connected then the 1 through 5 is temperature and not humidity setting.
You might want to go into the clinical setup menu and confirm what the humidity level is. Default from the factory is 1...so 70%.
I just played my my machine with the heated hose (hadn't been using it lately) and the only place I could see where to change the actual humidity delivered was in the clinical setup menu. At the top of the machine controls with the round knob...I can only access 1 through 5 which is temperature.

Thanks for the info!! Our Respiratory Therapist told us wrong then! She told me the numbers 1-5 was humidity. UGH.Pugsy wrote:https://www.cpap.com/productpage/pr-sys ... ifier.html

Re: Bloody nose? More Humidity needed?
The 60 series machine is the first heated hose machine that Respironics has ever offered and up until now the 1 through 5 was humidity and if the heated hose wasn't attached it would then be humidity.
But if the heated hose is attached (the white hose has a black end that plugs into the swivel on the humidifier) then the 1 - 5 is air temp.
If the hose doesn't have a black end...not heated hose.

Yeah it's the black head that you have to push little buttons to disconnectPugsy wrote:The 60 series machine is the first heated hose machine that Respironics has ever offered and up until now the 1 through 5 was humidity and if the heated hose wasn't attached it would then be humidity.

Re: Bloody nose? More Humidity needed?
Yep, definitely the heated hose. I didn't doubt that you knew what you had...just mainly providing clarification to other 60 series users just in case they thought they had a heated hose with their machine. You know...a newbie reads this thread and they assume that they have a heated hose and go off looking for stuff in the clinical setup menu and can't find it.
The only reason I know about the default humidifier choice (in the clinical menu when heated hose is connected) set to 1 from factory is that I just got my 60 series machine last week and when you were asking your questions I went and hooked up my heated hose (had been using the regular hose with it) and I wanted to see exactly where the humidifier selection was (the 1 through 3 settings) and that's when I saw the 1 for humidifier.
Turning temperature only up...isn't going to increase the humidity being delivered and in your daughter's situation might actually make the drying out effect even worse.
If the RT didn't understand that the 1 through 5 settings on the machine were temp settings...I suspect that they didn't know about the default setting at 1 either. The DME may or may not have altered the default humidity setting.
Last night I used the heated hose set to 4 and the humidity setting maxed out at 3. I love the extra moisture. My nose is so clear this morning and I didn't have to use my usual squirt of Simply Saline to rehydrate the nasal mucosa. That's typically what I do when using the regular hose with the humidifier set to 5 in the new system one humidification mode.
I don't really need the heated hose in the summer but I know that I will need it in the winter...because of the colder room air and the fact that the room air is much drier in the winter time. At my preferred humidity settings & preferred room temp... rain out is a foregone conclusion and something I have dealt with in the winter ever since I started therapy.
