Wisp Nasal Mask: is X1 L the largest size?

Post by ellen1159 » Wed Aug 14, 2013 1:45 pm

I've been trying a Wisp nasal mask with "X1 L" stamped on the cushion. I'm assuming that's the size. Is that the largest they make?

I find that with the humidification and high pressures I need, this mask feels a little small on me and gets kind of stuffy. Can you suggest a nasal mask with slightly more room?

Thanks.

How long have you been using it? For me It worked better after being broken in a bit. I was actually about to give up on it before I started liking it.

not that long, I have been rotating between three masks to see which works the best (Quattro FX and Amara FFM's and Wisp). I like the idea of a nasal mask (and I can apparently use one even though my pressures are sky-high) but the chin strap doesn't stay put on my head. I am going to try a Chin Up strip tonight and see if that works to keep my mouth closed. If not, then I'll have to go back to full face masks. So far the Quattro leaks less but tends to ride up, the Amara just leaks like a sieve even with a pad a cheek liner.

I like the seal on the Wisp; I really hope the chin up strips work.

Simplyme made a strap for the Quattro FX to go across the bottom straps and under the chin to keep the mask from riding up the face.

I had the same high hopes for the Wisp. However, I had too many leaks using it 'bareback' so tried a Pad-a-Cheek liner. That helped muffle the leaks to a degree. Next I tried a chinstrap, the same basic principle as Chin up Strips. That also helped stop my tongue from sliding back into my throat, but finally, in conjunction with the chinstrap, I resorted to using a 3/8" vertical piece of 3M NexCare tape on my lips to seal them... this cut down on the mouth leaks and whistling sounds. I can still sip water and breath thru the corners of my mouth with the tape on. Yeah, I know it's a lot more stuff to deal with but IMO that seems to me to be the typical method of solving problems regarding CPAP. Not many people will tell you there are so many problems when you start out with your CPAP therapy. Of course there are the lucky few who have zero problems <sigh>

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

For me the roomiest-feeling nasal mask is a cloth mask.
Sleepweaver Advance or Elan.

I asked the tech at my sleepdoc's office who assists with mask fittings about using Nexcare tape on my lips and she discouraged me, saying in the event of a power failure I won't be able to automatically breathe through my mouth.

I wish I were one of those lucky few who mask up the first night home with the machine and sleep through. It's been three and ahalf months for me and I still can't manage to sleep more than an hour, if at all.

I would definitely give the Elan a try. It is the most comfortable mask there is. It works really well with higher pressure too.

I used to recommend fully taping one's mouth, but these days I don't recommend it because of the reason you just mentioned above. Also, I don't think it's necessary to fully tape one's entire mouth. I do however like using the 3/8" VERTICAL strip of tape. It doesn't take much to seal one's lips and a small piece of tape seems to do the trick for me. Like I said I can easily breath out of the sides of my mouth if I have to in the event of a power failure. However, like all issues of mouth taping, you have to decide if its right for you. Good luck and let us know what eventually works for you.

I assumed you meant the entire mouth, and I think that's what the tech responded to. vertical sounds like it could work and be safe.
