Question about using ACE bandage as a chin strap
I used Walgreen's self-adhesive 3" bandage as home-made chin strap last night, and I found that it worked very well despite the sticky feeling on my face I just wonder whether it is reusable, and if so, how long it lasts and how to clean it. Also, I have to use a safety pin to hold both ends of the bandage together. Has anyone ever been pricked by the needle (somehow) coming out of the sheathe at night? Thanks!

Re: Question about using ACE bandage as a chin strap
Safety pins come open all the time. They have been known to do so even on babies.
Nonetheless, the reusable ACE bandages have been used as chin straps,
perhaps using the little clips that come with them.
The self-stick bandage might become annoying or soiled after a while.

Re: Question about using ACE bandage as a chin strap
I don't use the ACE as a chin strap, but here's my experience with a slightly different use.
For my chin strap, I use the PapCap. To prevent mouth leaks, I used 2" wide 3M micro-foam tape. Long enough to cover my mouth, plus a half inch on each end. The tape got wet but had enough area around the lips to remain sealed. I was uneasy with so much tape over my mouth, so I reduced it to a 3/4" wide strip, same length. I then had trouble with the tape getting wet and letting air escape from my lips.
I added one horizontal loop of 2" ACE bandage under the chin strap. The bandage adds just enough pressure on the tape to prevent leaks. I use a couple of safety pins to join the ends. (So far I've never had a loose pin.) With the self-adhesive type, I don't have to use any pins. A 1" overlap stays in place all night. Of course, it's not under as much tension as a chin strap. I have oily skin, but I can reuse the self-adhesive tape for a couple of weeks before tossing it. The non-adhesive type just goes into the washer/dryer along with my PapCap.
This has been a slow process over the last year and a half to arrive at this point. My next step will be to eliminate the tape altogether and try just the horizontal loop of ACE to keep my lips sealed. I may have to use the self-adhesive ACE since it definitely has a tacky texture to it.
Before all of this started (11/2010), I was a champion snorer with constant nose problems, so all of my breathing was via my mouth. Since my diagnosis, my nose problems have gone away. I now breathe through my nose 99 44/100% of the time, with my tongue vacuum-stuck to my upper front teeth.
I am so jealous of those of you who slap on a nasal pillow, no chin strap, no nothing, and then have zero unintentional leaks. This journey has been hard for me, but I've settled into a routine that seems to work. I'll keep trying little changes. Engineers always have to tweak.
Good luck, Earl
