Can a dirty CPAP machine cause dizzyness in the morning?

Post by JimmyP44 » Sat Sep 07, 2013 6:17 pm

Hello,

I am using Resmed S9 for OSA and have noticed that sometimes I wake up in the morning a bit dizzy when I turn my head. I have been cleared of all other health issues. I get quite tardy when it comes to cleaning the machine, I don't clean it for a month sometimes and when I get the dizzyness I clean it. Could germs in it do this? I suppose I have to try to get into a routine of cleaning it at least weekly. Anyone know about the effects a dirty CPAP can have?

Dizziness sometimes comes from inflamed sinuses, pressing on the ears, which can be a reaction to what ever is growing in your dirty machine.

Dizziness while turning the head?
I wouldn't rule out a problem in the neck or spine.
The trick is getting your doctor to REALLY look at it.
Have him check the sinuses, too, as long as you have his attention.

Cpap is known to lower blood pressure, and if yours isn't that high to begin with, it's very likely you could experience a problem like that first thing. And I very, very much doubt that random dust etc. could have anything to do with dizziness (esp. as I do happen to have a good idea of the various things that can cause it).

More than likely its the pressure effecting the inter ear, it plugs mine up. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes to get my hearing back to normal, it's a small price to wake up aliveeach morming. Jim

There is really nothing to clean on the machine. If the filter is clean you can eliminate that from your problem...(Unless you have an EXCEPTIONALLY dirty home). Some of us rarely or never clean our humidifiers . See your doctor and have him diagnose these symptoms. There are many things that can cause this inconsistant dizziness. I have had it for years when I get up suddenly or when I look up (like painting a ceiling). In my case it's just age.

LSAT and OP, you may want to read this as a possibility for your symptoms:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency ... 001420.htm

very common. 2 times with a clinician doing epley's maneuver fixed mine.

google epley's maneuver if you want to see u-tube videos showing the technique. took less than 10 minutes.

Regularly clean your machine. Remove it as a possible factor causing your symptoms.

People do get sick all the time with dirty air handling systems. There is the sick building system. When I was restoring my house, I had to have an air filter in my bedroom so my air conditioning system didn't make my sick until I could fix it and not have mold.

Again, regularly clean your machine and remove it as a possible factor causing your symptoms.

In engineering we call it peeling the onion. The onion is your technical problems, and you just start removing possible causes until you find the one that is the cause of the problem.

How do you "clean your machine?"

Wash the tank, hose, and mask; change the filter; wipe down everything reachable, including the table and any items nearby.
Vacuum/shampoo bedroom carpet--clean the entire room if you can. Some people use ozone devices made for cpap use.
I doubt they have value, but they seem to be quite profitable.

I'm pretty much with my fellow Brewer/Packer fan LSAT. All I have to do with my gizmo is wash the little filter, make sure the humidifier doesn't have a build-up, and see to it that the mask is clean. What else is there?

Two minor problems I have on occasions are that my hearing seems stuffed up when I arise and a dryness in my wind pipe will make me feel a touch light-headed. Both sensations normally abate as the day unfolds.

I will say this: feeling that air going from the CPAP system and into one's respiratory system is one of the most glorious sensations in life after decades of sh*tty sleep. It borders on being the breath of life.

Thanks, oak. I should also have mentioned that, too.

My main concern about the hose is that my wife may try to connect it to the tailpipe of the car in our garage immediately below our bedroom. Now THAT would surely bring on uninterrupted, long-term sleep.
