Distilled water during travel

Post by frequentflier » Tue Oct 08, 2013 10:31 pm

I travel 200,000+ miles a year and am in all parts of the world. This makes it hard to plan on distilled water for my CPAP machine. I travel with a water analyzer that looks at any particulates in water. Distilled will register 0-1PPM of any particulate, purified about 20-50, tap 200+. What I stumbled upon is this. Most hotels around the world have ice machines. These ice machines that make clear ice do so in a process to take impurities and minerals out. So melted clear ice registers 0-1 PPM of any particulates. So now I travel, grab a bag of ice, let it melt, fill the CPAP. I do measure every time and so far so good. BTW the little water analyzer is inexpensive and portable.

Doesn't sound very sanitary. How many people put their hands or unsanitary scoops in the machine. Why don't you just use bottled water? Isn't it filtered? Is it possible to put small bottles of distilled water in your checked luggage? Or several 3 oz. Bottles in your quart bag to tide you over until you can locate where to buy? My husband as gone without occasionally.

One apartment rental had distilled water waiting for us. In France we bought distilled water at a pharmacy - there is one on practically every corner.

Sorry, it's late, missed the part about using bagged ice. Think bottled would still be the better way to go. I know I have read other threads on this topic.

I probably buck the system and break all the cpap laws, but I only ever use filtered tap water here at home - have done for a year or so now without any issues. When traveling overseas, for 6 weeks, recently, I just used tap water wherever we were staying. I usually get 3 nights out of one fill of the humidifier and then I give it a good rinse out and refill again ready for the next 3 nights. I have been doing this for 10 months with my present setup (S9 / H5I) and have not had any issues with mineral deposits or such like.

As long as you don't run it dry and rinse it frequently, the mineral deposits would be kept to a minimum if at all. Use the cleanest source of water that you can, but I wouldn't jump through many hoops to only use distilled or uber purified water.

As I understand it, distilled water is bad for drinking b/c it lacks certain minerals needed for the body. About those ice makers for human consumption they need to be checked like any other approved drinkable water. See here what they need to be checked for:

Drinking Water Contaminants
http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants/index.cfm

And your gadget does not check it.

I take about a quart. You have to declare it. I use a papFlask. Just print out a copy of TSA guidelines regarding medical fluids.

That shouldn't be allowed. If it works for you, fine, but the document to which you linked clearly says liquids necessary for the flight will be allowed. Not a quart for the trip!

"Medically required liquids, such as baby formula and food, breast milk and medications are allowed in excess of 3.4 ounces in reasonable quantities for the flight."

Does anyone know if it's okay to plug in your CPAP machine on a long 8-hour flight from the mainland to Hawaii?
