On a PR machine, the smooth side faces in, the fibrous rough side faces out.
I assume the ResMed is the same.

The rough side or fuzzier side faces out so that it can gather the dust particles easier. It's a bit difficult to tell which is the fuzziest side sometimes depending on the manufacturer but I had some real for sure ResMed hypoallergenic filters that were really difficult to feel the difference.

I just put mine in - didn't realize one side is different than the other? With the newer filters I don't think it matters,

I think the most important thing is if you take it out to check it, don't put it back in the opposite way.

Picked some up last week. When I read this thread I thought "well, who knew there was a correct orientation?" Turns out in this particular instance I guessed right! Wee hoo. I had a 50/50 chance, right?
