Alarm options for sleep apnea devices?

Post by ilmdc » Mon Nov 18, 2013 7:58 pm

Hello,

I was recently diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea via a split night sleep study, and have been using a CPAP device with memory card logging for about three weeks. Curious to know how my nightly sleep was going, I downloaded a software application to view my results on a weekly basis vice every month or two with the doctor. Fast forward to today, and I've had a chance to get trends on what the device is reporting. In a nutshell, I have 1-3 OSA events a night (sometimes 0), with the majority being "clear airway events" which pushes my AHI on average to about 12 each night. Most of these events occur when I am between sleep and waking up.

I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow, and was curious to know if theres anything on the market that can alert one via an alarm when the clear airway events start up towards the end of sleep? The closest I've found that is not Apnea related is the Zeo sleep headband which offers a "smart alarm". I've been able to wake up ahead of some of the events on my own, and have felt markedly more alert and productive during the day. If there's anything that can help with this, I'd like to ask my doctor about it. Google searches, asking friends with apnea, etc has not helped with info.

Thanks,

Ian

If your total events each night don't get above 12 and your total sleep hours average 8, then your AHI will be about 1.5 which is a really ood number

It is common to have clear airway events during the period between awake and asleep as your breathing control mechanism switches between watching O2 levels and watching CO2 levels. For most people, these two indicators don't exactly match so temporary breathing interruptions can occur. If they are mostly like this, then they are generally ignored.

Sound as if your treatment is going well.

Depending on how long those CA's last and if your O2 dips low with them you might need a different machine (ASV or VPAP).
Most people have transitional CAs, especially when they are first falling asleep or transitioning to a new sleep level, you don't want to be shocked awake at that point..
