Very sore throat without CPAP

Post by bigcat » Thu Nov 28, 2013 4:36 pm

I have been using CPAP/APAP for over 8 years. It works great and I love it. My question, what can you do for those nights when you can't use your cpap? If I sleep, or attempt to sleep without my Cpap, I get a horrible sore throat. Not just scratchy, but very painful. 8 of 10 on the pain scale. Because of new insurance, I had to do a sleep study last night without Cpap. It was horrible. The only other time was while in the hospital with feeding tube. It has to be an extreme condition for me not to have it, but that is life. Any ideas on what to try to keep from getting such a horrible sore throat when it's not possible to have my cpap?

I have read some and see it could be gerd. I do take Prilosec daily, and that didn't help.

I can't answer for the sleep study night, but a feeding tube (or any other swallowed one) will very often leave you with a very sore throat - can't really be helped and it will go away, but it's just one of those 'side effects' you might have to write off. But it's not Cpap related.

The sore throat is only related to absence of cpap. The feeding tube and sleep study were just examples of when you can't use your cpap. Just like a broken cpap, however I have 3 backups, so that isn't an issue. My concern is what can be done to alleviate sore throat when you don't have a cpap? I don't see it happening often, and I might have to grin and bear it, but I thought it was worth a shot to ask. I have never had a sore throat that was cpap related. In fact, I find cpap alleviates symptoms from sickness and colds. Thanks.

It sounds like Cpap is covering up something else, and maybe you need to ask your ENT about it - don't want to relate everything to OSA or Cpap, even if something coincides.

I get a slightly sore throat when I don't use my CPAP which I attribute to obstructive apnea causing loud snoring (my throat vibrates.) When I don't have my CPAP I use an oral appliance ("Snore Guard") which is available over-the-counter in Canada. It isn't as effective as the CPAP, but it's effective enough to stop my snoring and avoid an irritated throat the next morning.

I'm nowhere near an "8 out of 10" in terms of pain, however (it's barely 1 out of 10), so I'm not sure if simple snoring irritation is what you're experiencing.

Pre -cpap I woke up with a sore throat and a mouth that felt like a dried out sponge and I would spend some time coughing up mucus caused by GERD. Between the gerd and the snoring I was a wreck.
