Cronic Dry Eyes & Irritating Ointment
After eye surgery and 2 lens transplants my eyes dry out every night as I always use my CPAP. After 2 eye emergencies this weekend my eye surgeons told me eye drops for dryness and ointment are required every night in both eyes. My eyes now are blurred and irritated, almost all day. The Sodium Chloride Ophthalmic Ointment USP 5% was the prescription. Two eye doctors told me this is now essential. The emergency was due to 4 abrasions on the eye surface cased by the CPAP. Any tips or ideas on how to reduce the misery level?

I can't see anyone here having answers you didn't get from two eye doctors... we're cpap patients.
Re: Cronic Dry Eyes & Irritating Ointment
Sodium chloride ointment is used to reduce swelling of the cornea. Decreasing swelling of the cornea may lessen eye discomfort or irritation caused by the swelling and works by drawing fluid out of the cornea to reduce swelling. Have you asked whether the irritation is from the corneal abrasion, the surgery, or from the ointment?
I have used GenTeal PM Lubricant Eye Ointment Severe Dry Eye Relief Formula (red one), which was suggested by my ophthalmologist for dry eyes following cataract surgery. Ask your doctor if you can also use something during the day to relieve the irritation. If two doctors said you need a medication to maintain your sight, I would believe them!
Do you know what your CPAP leaks look like? Sounds like it is critical that you have a mask and a fit that minimizes leaks.

If your problem is ALSO combined with dry mouth, there is a prescription drug Evoax, that might help you. I have both dry mouth & eyes and Evoax has helped me a lot. If it is just your dry eyes I don't think this medication would help but you could ask your Dr.

Have you considered augmenting your regime with a good supplement? Just a suggestion here to make sure that you are getting the right Omega 3s which are vital for good eye health (heart too). I have found that this helps me - http://www.amazon.com/Thera-Tears-Nutri ... supplement
Run it by your doctor. It takes a few weeks to experience the benefits, but many dry eye sufferers - myself included - use it regularly and find it quite helpful.
