BiPap users - ever get sore diaphragm muscle?

Post by Fromaginator » Sun May 28, 2006 12:59 pm

I'm *brand spankin' new* to using any kind of Pap - and my titrated pressures are considered to be on the high end, from what everyone's told me.

My 2nd night with the machine, I get an ever-so-slight soreness where the left side of my diaphragm would be.

It could have something to do with my sleeping position - but was wondering if this could just be normal "body adjustment" - considering I'm at a high pressure?

Anyone else have that kind of thing happen at first?

When I started cpap, then 7 months later when I switched to bilevel my chest hurt so much for the 1st 3 nights, that I would get up and walk around.

I don't believe itis a unique bilevel situation. I know why it happened on cpap. Wasn't quite as sure why on bilevel.

Cheers

Yes, I had some soreness throughout my chest for a few days . I just assumed that it was from breathing deeper or unused areas as I was retaining CO2 with some inflammation in the lower part of lungs (per pulmonologist due to the CO2 probably). Prior to Bipap the Oximeter results were 36 episodes of 70% O2. Would like to see more discussion on this.

costal chondritis chest pain

Post by Mile High Sleeper » Sun May 28, 2006 4:43 pm

I had chest pain after I got on full nights of APAP (after discovering the DME incorrectly set the machine to only 4 hours a night) and after spending a night on BiPAP in the sleep lab. Went into urgent care on the way home from the sleep study and got my heart checked out, which is always a good idea with chest pain! Later my primary care physician discovered it was costal chondritis, inflamed tendons; I think because my chest was expanding more than usual. You can feel it on the end of your ribs and around the breast bone. It goes away by itself. If you search this site for chest pain or chest pressure, you will find others experiencied it. Always better to get it checked out in case it's a heart attack.

Thanks for the replies.

It makes sense - to have the muscles get a bit sore when I've likely gone years without taking full breaths at night in a "supine" position.

It's not the kind of pain that I'm worried if it would be heart issues, but that's good advice the previous poster gave.

Same kind of soreness you'd get after laughing too hard (if you're out of shape...I realize some of us may have never experienced that problem .
