What is the best AutoPap right now?
What is the best AutoPap right now?
My daily machine System One just took a dumper and I'm using my M-Series that I normally use just for travel.
What is the best Auto CPAP machine that's out now?
What is the best travel CPAP that people have used extensively and really have reasons to recommend it?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: What is the best AutoPap right now?
I think the reason nobody's responding is that it's really an impossible question to answer. There are two fully-data-capable top-of-the-line APAP machines with heated humidifier and hose: the PR 560-series Auto and the ResMed S9 Autoset. Both are great machines, and the choice between the two comes down essentially to personal preference. Each has its own peculiar features, and you simply have to decide which is more important to you. Just as an idea, the S9 Autoset has a better LCD screen, is quieter, and uses oscilating pressure waves to distinguish between obstructive and central events; the 560 Auto is cheaper, detects Repiratory Effort Related Arousals (which the S9 does not), uses a puff of air to detect centrals, and is less finicky about its SD card. I would read the features list of both machines, compare prices, and choose the one you like best. You can't really go wrong with either machine.

The latinist is absolutely correct and I have used both when traveling. I see no need to have a separate travel machine beyond the convenience of not having to fiddle with the plug of the home machine.

If insurance is helping, go for the top.
The ResMed has the best display, but proprietary (read costly) DC power.
P/R has a ergonomic hose connection, easy, DC use, and a lower bottom line.
If money is an issue, DeVillBiss is worth considering, with a great package of features for a thrifty price.

Re: What is the best AutoPap right now?
I have used Respironics for a long time but now prefer the ResMed AutoSet S9. The doc recommend the switch to S9 because I use a wide pressure range and he said the S9 responds more aggressively vis-a-vis raising the pressure when flow limitations are detected. My experience seems to bear this out and my typical treated AHI is now very low and lower than with Respironics.
I travel extensively with the S9 and it is not a problem. A travel machine will only save you a few cubic inches and since carryon as medical device is recommended, a few inches is not noticeable.
Anyway, I want the same therapy when traveling as when at home. Consistency of treatment is important IMO.
In the end, you have to suit yourself and not me.

I can't speak to the ResMed brand, but I do like my Respironics. I am posting here to advise you to choose either a ResMed or Respironics & NOT the F&P Icon. I have an Icon (straight CPAP) and the quality of data is inferior to the other two brands.
Just my 2cents worth.

I have only used the Resmed S9 autoset, so I can't give a fair comparison. I can tell you that it does well as a travel machine, and I actually bought a used S9 autoset via craigslist so that I could use the same type of machine while traveling while leaving my insurance paid machine at home. That means if the machine gets stolen, I still have a machine waiting for me when I get home. And after a long day of travel, I can just go to bed with a machine that is ready for bed. I was actually willing to accept even an s9 escape as the backup/travel machine as long as the price was good since it would not be my main machine. I just wanted to make sure that it sounded and felt the same so my sleep would not feel any different. I got lucky finding a great deal on the autoset. (I just saw another one for $240 in Bellingham, and one for $300 in the Seattle area).

Check out Robysue's comments..scroll down just a little bit to see her post. Edited last month to include information on the 2 main APAP brands.
It's a toss up. Pros and cons with either but none are deal breakers or makers.

Re: What is the best AutoPap right now?
Thanks everyone. My SystemOne bit the dust last month and I've been using my travel machine as my everyday one.
After reading Robysue's comments I chose the S9 Auto. I'll keep my AutoM as my travel machine.
Tonight I just ordered a shiny new S9 with humidifier, heated hose, filters, new PapCap, filters, etc. from CPAP.com
The travel part of it is a bit confusing but after chatting with the people at CPAP.com it seems like the S9 needs more power than my AutoM so the travel batteries that I use on planes don't really cut it. So, the S9 will be my every night machine and my AutoM will stay as my travel machine until it poops-out and then I'll look for travel options then.

Don't say "S9 Auto." You want the S9 AutoSet. If you say "S9 Auto," you may get the never to be sufficiently damned S9 Escape Auto.backdoc wrote:After reading Robysue's comments I chose the S9 Auto.

To the OP: It depends what you mean by the best? Each of the current Cadillac machines have good plusses and serious minuses too. Any of the auto machines with data will treat SDB just fine. Its a matter of price, what you pay out of pocket, plus user features. The S9 has a color screen but the 560 has an audible leak alert feature. The S9 can show what it is doing while on, while the 560 backlight goes off after a time, and stays off while running. So you need a flashlight to check pressures at night, if you wish.... (so dumb). The S9 has a filter frame, while the 560 does not, and so the 560 filter can pop out if you sneeze.... The 560 is made in the USA and the Resmeds are not... The 560 has a top-mounted, swiveling hose outlet, while the S9 has a fixed hose outlet on the back of the box. Each of these are all little pros and nagging cons. Honestly, both machines are good, extremely quiet machines, but they also leave a LOT to be desired. (Neither have a clock, alarm or a radio function, which for a nightstand product, is a serious fail.) Both the S9 and 560 are starting to age, as well, and could stand a serious redesign already. One with actual consumers in mind.
Don't be limited to the 560 and S9 -- do look at the DeVilbiss models and the Fisher Paykel versions too. They are high quality products with a lot of good features as well. DeVilbiss has a 5-year warranty too.
Good luck.
Re: What is the best AutoPap right now?
Since you decided on the S9 AutoSet already....I bet you will like it.
I have used (and currently own) both brands (Respironics and Resmed) and they are both quite nice. Minor pros and cons with either really and since Respironics now has the heated hose option with the 60 series machines it pretty much levels the playing field.
For people using pressures in the higher teens I think I would suggest the S9 just because of how the EPR works. It might be a little more comfortable for some people a higher pressures with EPR being available. Minor pro but AFlex isn't a con though.
