Folks....please don't let this thread/topic become another pissing contest between the "cleaners" and "non cleaners" of anything. It seriously derails the thread and doesn't really help anyone.

Cleaning of ANYTHING for ANY REASON is a personal choice.

It WASN'T "should I clean my hose" or "why do you clean your hose" or a request to instigate a debate on whether to clean/wash/whatever the hose.

Please just answer the question as presented in the original post and let further comments about why or why not be absent since they are Off Topic.

This thread is fast becoming nothing but a side railed pissing contest and very borderline to getting locked because of such derailing.

I have never cleaned my cpap tube... I typically always replace it between 3-4 months, and never had any problem with anything "growing" in it within that interval. Perhaps in a warmer climate there's more concern, with the tube being "warm" all day and residual moisture/bacteria getting together to party?

If I was going to clean it, I'd go with 2-3 drops of DAWN brand dish soap in 1g warm water and "let it soak" for an hour. It has incredible wetting properties, nothing else is going to do a significantly better job at breaking down cell walls of any bacteria that might be there, and at that ratio it is effectively "unscented" -- which is really important to me as I have bad reactions to perfumes.

Another thing closely related to the tubing that I "never cleaned" on my PRS60 was the "elbow" that exits the humidifier and connects to the tube. It isn't easily removable, I never saw any instructions to clean it, and I never worried about it. But when I got my new Resmed machine and was cleaning up the old PRS60 for storage -- I found an exciting little colony of white mold growing in that elbow. Eeeeew. Eeeeeeeew. My lungs saw that and slapped me up side my head.

Fortunately the elbow on my new Airsense11 is easy to remove and clean, so I will be doing that regularly -- probably at the same ~3mo intervals when replacing the tubing with new. DAWN brand detergent will be the go-to solution for that as well.

To answer your original question, I use store-brand baby shampoo to clean my mask, tubing, and water chamber.

In the link above they state that when you disconnect your heated tubing from the machine that you should first unplug the CPAP from it's power source. This is the first that I've heard this. Does anyone actually do this?

If they're recommending removing power before disconnecting the heated tubing it seems logical that the power should also be removed before plugging the tubing into the machine no?

I never have. First I have heard of it as well though I do admit to probably not reading all the official warnings and/or directions for anything.
Been using a heated hose since the S9 first made them available so many years ago.
My personal opinion....one of those CYA things we get with any electrical appliance.

There's always going to be people who follow directions/warnings to the letter and always people who ignore or don't read or don't care. And always going to be people who overkill everything.

The tubing is an ideal environment for growth and that’s why most manufacturers recommend regular cleaning.

I don't care about one's cleaning rituals, but I do want to clear up this misconception.

The tubing is *NOT* an ideal environment for pathogen growth.

You, like most, associate humidity (which is important for pathogen growth), as the *only* requirement for pathogen growth. Simply being wet, does not make anything an ideal environment.

Pathogens also need organic nutrition. An ideal environment will contain the organic nutrients, water and a surface for them to thrive and populate. CPAP tubes don't supply organic material and their anti-bacterial surface minimises their ability to flourish.

That's why we have to have stickers on hair dryers that say not to use the hairdryer in the bathtub!

Plus...people back in the day were stupid apparently! And they call them the "Greatest Generation"!

I believe the majority of us don't ever bother with the hoses, or if they do it would only be after long intervals or if they saw 'something' in the hose. I would find other things to worry about.

I clean the hose if it has any different smell to it. But the VA thinks it needs to be replaced every 3 months, so I now have 5 brand new hoses lying around, taking up space. WOULD be more, but I do change it eventually, about once a year.
