Got me a Hybrid - report and quick question

Post by S-Dubya » Thu May 03, 2007 11:57 am

I was pretty enthused about the new ResMed masks, but they haven't trickled down from my DME's corporate distribution yet. So, they let me test drive a Hybrid yesterday and I was impressed from the get-go.

But first, I have a quick question: There has been some talk here about the new vs. the old headgear. Mine has grey on the skin side and black on the outside. Is this the new or the old?

My thoughts after one night? Awesome! It took me a little time to get the straps set just right and the nasal pillows took a moment to get situated, but pretty quickly it was very comfortable and essentially leak-free. Coming from a F&P FF431 I actually like the under-chin piece. After one night the only gripe I can come up with is the clips. They are a little bit difficult to get snapped on and off, but I imagine that with some practice they will get a lot easier.

You have the new headgear.

You know, it's funny--I love the clips on the Hybrid, but I fuss and fume over the ones on my UMFF, which a lot of people love. For some reason, on the UMFF, I just can't seem to hook the clip without a mirror!

From what people say the Hybrid is the better of the two masks. You have the good headgear,by the way. The old one was all black, no grey.

you have the new headgear

How do you know that your leakrate is good?

My leak with hybrid is 50-90 at pressure 0f 8-10

If the top head strap has a buckle on it, you have the new headgear.

I asked my DME about the Hybrid vs the new Resmed mask that seems to be its knock-off. He told me that the Resmed sales person had shown it to him but he'll be back 3 weeks later with more samples for patient trials.

Based on initial observation, my DME says that the pillows of the Resmed knock-off will have trouble staying put in the nares when the jaw drops down because of the headstraps design. He also feels that the clips seem too flimsy, they could easily come undone while asleep.

He loves the Hybrid and told me that over 70 of his patients are using it, most of them are happy. He took care of the initial unhappy ones by giving them the new headgear for free (apparently the Hybrid manufacturer gave him 20 of the new headgear for free).

My DME said about the same thing. I wanted to try the resmed Liberty because it looks lighter than the Hybrid, but she said she isn't hearing anything good about the mask and that the Hybrid is a much better designed product. She said the labs are sticking to the Hybrid so I will too. I guess I have to wait on the Bravo for something lighter. I just hope and pray the pillows are the same as the Hybrid or it will be just another pillow mask in my drawer full of "mask of the month" pillow masks.
My poor half priced Opus just joined that drawer after just one night.

Five nights now with the Hybrid and I love it more each night. I love the small footprint on my face. I love the comfortable interface and nasal pillows. The headgear is comfortable and holds the mask perfectly. Its a great mask!

I can't give any numbers as far as leak rate, but I can tell you that with the 431 and the UMFF I often awoke with leaks around my eyes and near the corners of my mouth. I have little or no noticeable leaks with the Hybrid and I don't have to overtighten the headgear to eliminate leaks.

I know some folks have modified their Hybrids by clipping the link between the nasal pillows or removing the chin piece, but I have not felt the need to make any changes.

I am thrilled with the Hybrid!

My mother tried the hybrid and could not get used to it. She gave it to me but no longer had the instructions. Is there an easy way to fasten the clips? I have arthritis in my hands and find it difficult to handle small objects.

Clips are not the ideal design features of the Hybrid. Many Hybrid users complain of their difficulty even when not afflicted by arthritis

Why is it that I experience deeper sleep with the Hybrid? My AHI values are similar to what I got with the Swift & chin strap but I feel like I had deeper sleep when I wake up every night I have used he Hybrid.

That's a good question, Nathan, I experience the same thing at times.

I started out with the Swift, and I have no problem with leaks, as long as I tape!

The Hybrid, I do have a tougher time with leaks, but those nights where I get a good fit and seal, the sleep seems better even though it's not reflected in better numbers.

Anyone wish to postulate on why?

The clips are the one downside I have found with the Hybrid. Not bad enough for me to worry about them much, though. However, I can see how they would be extra difficult with arthiritic hands. I can say that each night it gets easier to fasten them.

Rooster,

If you think the deeper sleep is because I'm getting more air into the lungs from breathing with both nose and mouth, do you think a standard Full Face mask like the UMFF, HC431 or for that matter the new Quattro would have the same effect?

I read another post that said the Resmed Quattro and Liberty masks had lower CO2 flush out, I wonder if that will negatively affect the quality of sleep.
