Nares and Nostrils

Post by dkeat » Fri Sep 23, 2005 2:54 am

Would someone be so kind as to explain to me the difference between "nares" and "nostrils"?

Thanks

David

Nostrils are the passages inside. Nares are the openings you see.

And then there are "round" nares, and .....

Nah, won't go there again! lol

But here's an interesting little tidbit. The pronounciation.

One nare is pronounced "nair."

If you are blessed with a pair of them, they are your "nair-eeze". Yup, two syllables!

It's not a word I've had occasion to say out loud more than once in my life (don't even ask!) and of course I said it wrong. I said, "nairs". Oh well.

How is the plural spelled? "NARES".

By the way, for Scrabble players, NARE is a legitimate play!

Sleep well!

Oh, I love Scrabble. My grandmother and I played it by the hour when I was young(er).

Yup. Nare and nares.
