Diet: Eat Fat!

No, Coke wasn't 8 ounces. Those curvy bottles were 6.5 ounces. I certainly remember paying a nickel for a bottle in first grade. Maybe before that I paid 4 cents?

Grandpa's Coke was also made with cane sugar, not high fructose corn syrup;
and citric acid, not phosphoric acid.
(Maybe a wee bit of cocaine was a good thing.)
There was no "diet coke", so diabetics simply didn't drink the stuff,
(unless they became hypoglycemic, and needed quick sugar).

The local Mexican import store here sells Coke imported from the factory in Mexico. It is surprising how much better it tastes than "our" coke, and it is made with cane sugar, no HFCS or anything weird.

I started eating Paleo, very low carb, high fat, and have lost around 30 pounds since starting.....down to about 200 now, so I rarely have a Coke anymore....might splurge on a Mexican coke once a month or so.

In the "old days", diabetes was called "sugar diabetes" and diabetics were told to avoid sugar.

Now (inexplicably!), diabetics are told that "sugar in moderation" is OK (it's NOT!), but fat is to be avoided (why???).

The world has turned upside down thanks to corporate interests (a lot of US agriculture is tied up in making sugar (via HFCS) and starches which turn into sugar in the body (I heard somewhere that only 3% of American agricultural land is devoted to non-cereal grain crops!). And big pharma is another factor. The American Diabetes Association and the American Nutrition and Dietetics Association (formerly American Dietetics Association) receive a large chunk of their funding from agricultural and pharmacy interests. Coca Cola is one of their major sponsors, especially in sponsoring professional education programs. They love to teach and preach moderation, because it perpetuates the idea that Coke is a perfectly OK thing to ingest as part of a "healthy" diet.

Moderation has been the message for a long, long time. Today I heard on a podcast that SEVENTY-NINE percent (79%!)of Americans are obese. So tell me again how moderation is working out for everyone???
